'Doctor Who' Hits A Cool High Note With New Season Trailer
The second season with Ncuti Gatwa debut April 12 on Disney+ and BBC One
It’s the Doctor and the nurse traveling the universe. The BBC released the second trailer for the upcoming season of Doctor Who on Sunday, starring Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor and Varada Sethu as new companion Belinda Chandra. The trailer for the season premiering April 12 on BBC and Disney+ was released during the fifth round FA Cup match between Manchester United and Fulham. The match needed a little extra time but the trailer still hit franchise socials anyway at 6:45 PM local time.
The one minute 40 second trailer opens with Belinda being awakened by the Red Robots abducting her people. There are divers going up against a giant spider monster, a beiger one than the Racnoss. Another scene has The Doctor in a bowler hat looking up, seemingly to find a walking dinosaur skeleton. The trippy reality distortion in the TARDIS is shown again, as the trailer confirms the return of Bonnie Langford as Mel Bush, former companion to the Sixth and Seventh Doctors who has appeared in at least one episode every year for the last four years. The housing complexes are seemingly falling out of reality. We go from Belinda asking the Doctor his name, and she takes his answer to mean she takes on The Nurse. Inside the TARDIS there’s a display of Belinda’s doppelgänger Mundy Flynn from last season’s “Boom”, which Sethu played. It is unclear if she sees it at that moment. There’s more with the robots before The Doctor opens the TARDIS doors in space again. He declares himself the Velma for any Scooby-Doo invocation. After several cuts of traversing and exploration, the long-discussed Space Eurovision, or more accurately Interstellar Song Contest episode gets its spotlight, with the event co-hosted by Rylan Clark. Mrs. Flood, played by Anita Dobson, is in that audience too! She loves a good show, just like she loves Mr. Ring-a-Ding, who we get to hear for the first time, voiced by Alan Cumming. There’s missing people and airlocks, before we get a conversation between Ruby Sunday (last season’s companion played by Millie Gibson and her ally played by Jonah Hauer-King, who looks like he’s about to be grabbed by a creature. Intercut with all the dangers they face, The Doctor reiterates his promise to keep Belinda safe and get her home.
'Doctor Who' Gets Season Premiere Date With New, Standard Disney+ Timeslot
Disney+ and the BBC may very well be emphasizing the “alien” in alienation in slotting the new season of Doctor Who. The pair have announced that the former’s second season will premiere on Saturday, April 12 at 8 AM UK time on BBC iPlayer, and simultaneously in the rest of the world on Disney+. If you know your time zones, that’s 3 AM Eastern and midni…
Jemma Redgrave was briefly seen as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart again in the trailer, previously confirmed to return alongside Ruth Madeley’s Shirley Anne Bingham and Alexander Devrient’s Colonel Ibrahim. Redgrave was in the press release, but the latter were not. Neither was Susan Twist as Susan Triad, while Archie Panjabi and Rose Ayling-Ellis were absent as well and Christopher Chung as Cassio was listed. Other guest stars introduced by the press release were Caoilfhionn Dunne, Evelyn Miller, Ariyon Bakare, and Julie Dray. Several of the newly unveiled even put out statements, like Rylan, who said “As a massive Whovian, getting the call to be in Doctor Who was a call I’ve always dreamed of getting. The episode is all my favourite things about the show with an added song contest set in space. It really is a dream come true. I can’t wait for everyone to see it. It really is going to be out of this world.”
Evelyn Miller added “I’m so delighted to be joining the Doctor Who team. It was such a feature of my childhood, the memory of curling up on the sofa with my brother and watching the Weeping Angels episode from behind a pillow still makes me laugh. We were terrified. The love and passion that’s gone into this series is so clear. I can’t wait for people to see it!” Ariyon Bakare remarked “As a kid, I’d run around the house chasing my little sister, arms raised, shouting, I am a Dalek! Back then, I never imagined I’d even meet a Doctor, let alone guest star in the show. So, returning to the Whoniverse for Season 2 is an absolute treat. I can’t wait for everyone to see what we’ve created.”
Dunne put in “I am so grateful to have been asked to be a part of this exciting second season of Doctor Who. As a longtime fan of the show, it has been a dream come true. And to get to work with such an amazing gang, Ncuti and Varada, such a wonderful duo, this absolutely stellar cast and such a supportive and hardworking crew. I couldn't have asked for a better gang of folk to have hurtled through the Whoniverse with.”
And finally, we have Dray who reveals herself as Rylan’s Interstellar Song Contest avian alien cohost when she says: "I am so excited to be joining the cast of Doctor Who, an iconic show with such a rich legacy. I had such an amazing time working alongside Rylan while wearing some beautiful prosthetics, and can't wait for audiences to see the spectacular Interstellar Song Contest be brought to life! Voilà!”
The new season of Doctor Who is set to see a mysterious force get in the way of bringing Belinda home, so instead they face great dangers, ferocious enemies and wilder terrors than ever before. It is produced by Bad Wolf with BBC Studios for the BBC and Disney Branded Television, and will premiere premiere on Saturday, April 12 at 3 AM Eastern/Midnight Pacific on Disney+, making for a simultaneous 8 AM release on iPlayer in the UK. The linear timeslot on BBC One is seemingly unconfirmed.
