'Doctor Who' Takes On San Diego Comic-Con With An Intergalactic 'Star Trek' Friendship
When the TARDIS meets a Federation starship, there’s fun to be had
Doctor Who is heading to San Diego Comic-Con! Fifteenth Doctor Ncuti Gatwa, Millie Gibson, who of course plays companion Ruby Sunday, and showrunner Russell T Davies will celebrate the first season of this new era concluded just weeks ago. And they won’t be doing it alone. Not only are they getting a massive panel at Hall H, but a live episode of the series’s official podcast will be recorded, a TARDIS booth will arrive in the exhibition hall with exclusive merchandise. In addition, they will be teaming with their American brother in sci-fi, Star Trek, in person for the first time, with a special panel and gallery experience.
The Hall H panel is called “Into the Whoniverse”, happening Friday, July 26 from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM PT, so 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM Eastern. The aforementioned trio will discuss the latest season, including the finale, armed with behind-the-scenes stories, fan surprises, and a special sneak peek. Spinoffs? Season 2? Will it be the same peek that was only officially released on Doctor Who Unleashed and not officially posted to YouTube? Hopefully not. The panel will be moderated by Josh Horowitz, host of the Happy Sad Confused podcast and moderator of the The Penguin panel.
Gatwa, Gibson, and Davies will be making their first in-person appearances on The Official Doctor Who Podcast, for what’s being called “TARDIS Chats: The Doctor Who Podcast Live at Comic-Con”. It will be held at the Neil Morgan Auditorium in the San Diego Central Library on Saturday, July 27 from 10 AM to 11 AM PDT. They will dive into all details of season 1, and they'll field questions from fans both locally San Diego and fished from fans on Twitter from around the world.
Friendship is the best thing ever, except for best friendship which is a little better. “Intergalactic Friendship Day: Star Trek x Doctor Who” will see Davies sit down with modern Trek shepherd Alex Kurtzman to celebrate the power of friendship, teaming up to spotlight shared values of friendship, hope, and fandom, in an exclusive conversation about the art of storytelling across time and space. That’s also Saturday in room 6A from 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM PT. The theme extends to the "Friendship is Universal" Gallery Experience, which will feature original costumes and props from both long-running franchise, with photo opportunities and special friendship bracelet giveaways for fans. The activation runs from 11 AM to 8 PM Thursday to Saturday, closing at 5 PM on Sunday.
The exhibition hall will also give a chance to ride the TARDIS through time and space and ogfer exclusive merchandise at the immersive Doctor Who booth (#4129) starting on Wednesday the 24th. All news and coverage will come through from the Doctor Who social channels. As for Trek, its main Star Trek Universe panel happens in Hall H on Saturday from 1:45-3:15 PM PT, moderated by director and executive producer Justin Simien. It covers Strange New Worlds, Lower Decks, Starfleet Academy, and Section 31, all of which Kurtzman will be sat for. Because it’s a Paramount+ panel, it’s worth mentioning Prodigy’s is happening separately Sunday, July 28, 10 to 11 AM PT in Room 6DE and features Kate Mulgrew, Brett Gray and Kevin & Dan Hageman.
