'Doctor Who' Trailer Gives Fifteen And Ruby Butterflies As They Face The Strange
Adventure that will have you swinging and bopping all the way to May
Let the adventures begin. Disney+ and the BBC each released the official trailer for the next season of Doctor Who, as promised when its May 10 (west of GMT) and 11 (GMT and east of it) premiere dates were revealed a week ago.
The trailer opens with the Fifteenth Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, and his companion, Ruby Sunday, played by Millie Gibson, barreling into UNIT offices on the TARDIS, before it gives people a skim through how they met in the Christmas special “The Church on Ruby Road”. When the Doctor says he’s the Doctor, “Changes” by David Bowie kicks in as it cuts through several scenes of him in different outfits, including from the Beatles episode and the ballroom episode that Ruby will soon call a Bridgerton experience. For some reason we see a David Tennant hologram in that last one. We see the TARDIS lose a little gravity and make its way to dinosaur times. At the sound of thunder, a butterfly step changes Ruby’s entire genetic makeup. New aliens are confronted outside the gala. Ruby’s packing and shoots gleefully somewhere in ruins that she’s later seen crying over. That Beatles episode might have some whiplash if the whole world slides into the pit. We get our best look at the monster from the first episode yet. There’s another glimpse of Rose Noble, Donna’s daughter played by Yasmin Finney. Jinkx Monsoon’s character weaponizes music and immobilizes Ruby. She gets a hug from mum Carla. The Doctor makes the same safety promise that he made to Rory’s dad at the end of “The Power of Three”, it makes for some very grim results as the trailer then takes a very Ruby-centric turn. When you can change time, everything is possible.
Glimpses of Kate Stewart and Mel Bush’s returns, played once again by Jemma Redgrave and Bonnie Langford, are also seen, while those who identify quicker also saw the previously-reported Duchess Indira Varma plays, as well as roles for Callie Cooke and Genesis Lynea. And that’s on top of Aneurin Barnard as Roger ap Gwilliam, Jonathan Groff, and Lenny Rush as Morris. There’s even a role for season 18 (Tom Baker’s last) costume designer June Hudson. The ominous focus on Ruby’s story is certainly warranted, as for all intents and purposes most of her story will be told this season, as only one of her three episodes next season will be used to properly wrap the character’s story before Gibson completely departs the series, replaced as companion by Varada Seethu.
What did showrunner Russell T. Davies say for the trailer release? “Here we go! May 11! So proud of [Ncuti] and [Millie] - I mean look at them! What blazing stars! And this is just the beginning, we have epic tales to come! Alongside the most intimate and heartfelt stories too. Monsters, gods, villains, babies… and a very precise distance? 🤔 COMING SOON ♥️ ♥️ ➕ 🟦” and then tagged all relevant network accounts, Disney’s own new dedicated Doctor Who account.
The new season series of Doctor Who begins with the release of two episodes on Friday, May 10 at 7 pm Eastern as part of a global simulcast on Disney+ everywhere but the UK with its 12 am Saturday, May 11 GMT release on BBC iPlayer which is the equivalent time in their time zone, followed by its regular airing on BBC One. The eight-episode season continues weekly in that release format.
