'Elemental' Sets Disney+ Landfall After Massive Theatrical Comeback
There was certainly no flameout here after the worst opening in Pixar history
You’re not going to have to wade…wait much longer to see the comeback story of the summer on Disney+. Pixar’s Elemental will be hitting the streamer on September 13, which is next Wednesday.
The news was originally slipped into Disney+’s “September Blockbuster Offer” video before getting its formal standalone announcement. It once again shows how closely Disney is sticking to its 90-day theatrical windows, as Elemental’s arrival is 90 days from the Thursday previews, and therefore 89 from the official Friday date. It’s also not coming alone, as far as directly related media. The making-of documentary Good Chemistry: The Story of Elemental and the short that accompanied the film’s theatrical release, Carl’s Date, the final story from the world of Up, will also be arriving then. The latter was originally announced for a February release on the service for Valentine’s Day more formally as the final episode of Dug Days before it was delayed and released in the manner it was.
Elemental initially opened with the worst opening weekend in Pixar history at $29.5 million domestically, but made a huge rebound. After 11 weeks, current totals have the film’s earnings at $153.6 million domestically with $480 million worldwide. It stars Leah Lewis as Ember Lumen and Mamoudou Athie as Wade Ripple, Ronnie del Carmen as Bernie, Ember's dad nearing retirement, Bernie; Shila Ommi as Cinder, Ember's love-seeking mom; Wendi McLendon-Covey as Gale Cumulus, who is Wade's stormy and Air-Ball-loving boss; Catherine O'Hara as Brook, Wade's welcoming mom; Mason Wertheimer as Clod, Ember’s neighbor with a crush; and Joe Pera as an overgrown bureaucrat working for the city, Fern.
The film is directed by Peter Sohn, produced by Denise Ream and executive produced by Pete Docter, from a screenplay by John Hoberg & Kat Likkel and Brenda Hsueh. In Good Chemistry, Sohn traces his parents’ journey from Korea to New York, explores his dad’s former grocery shop in the Bronx, and delves into his deciding to go into animation for a career rather than running the shop, all of which heavily inspired his movie.
While released in theaters three weeks after Disney’s The Little Mermaid live-action remake, Elemental’s Disney+ arrival will be just a week after the former’s, as it came on the day of writing. In addition, the Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3 edition of Assembled will be releasing on the date.
