'Final Space' Will See Its End As Warner Bros. Discovery Grants Creator License For Graphic Novel
The animated series created by Olan Rogers was written off by the company in last year's content purges
It’s been a year and a half since Adult Swim canceled the adult animated sci-fi series Final Space after three seasons. It was a year later, in September 2022 fated to be a tax write-off during the content purges done by Warner Bros. Discovery, easily one of the hardest-hit series. Now, the company last week granted series creator Olan Rogers the license to use the property to write a graphic novel to wrap up the series story.
Titled Final Space: The Final Chapter, Rogers posted a video on his YouTube channel expressing his excitement and explaining everything. It’s just one graphic novel, the offer was "non-negotiable", "take it or leave it", and there are tons of caveats. First off, funding can’t be Kickstarted. Clearly, WBD saw what Rogers did with his Godspeed Kickstarter, which had 3,629 backers raise $464,438 on an $80,000 goal, and got spooked, making sure he couldn’t replicate. He also must sell it on a website that he himself owns and not on any larger markets like Amazon or Walmart or any of that, so finalspaceends.com was born for the occasion. No third-party publishers, it must be self-published. There’s to be no animation, no voice work, and physical copies only. No digital copies whatsoever. But with no content restrictions, Rogers sees all the possibilities, so he is thrilled. He anticipates a very chunky page count at 4-500 pages, while leaving leeway for more. The journey starts today with preorders available on the website right now for $125. His current goal for release is mid-to-late 2024.
When Final Space began, Gary Goodspeed was a not-so-smart astronaut full of energy working off the end of his five-year sentence aboard the Galaxy One, a prison spacecraft. He encounters a mysterious planet-destroying alien and befriends it, naming him Mooncake. They learn that a sinister, telekinetic being named Lord Commander is pursuing them. Gary and Mooncake go on a quest to save the universe, with help from the AI named HUE and a growing crew of shipmates full of personal troubles. They do their best to uncover the secrets surrounding Final Space, a strange realm where the universe ends. When we last saw the heroes, the team had just escaped back to their home, leaving Mooncake to die. This devastated Gary, who started to break down as the final space poisoning started to heal. However, he did not have enough time to process his loss as the cosmos began to bleed final space energy, with Invictus towering over them. The death of Mooncake, others, and the allyship of Ash weighs heavily on the Galaxy Two crew as their fight for existence continues between the Titans and the universe.
The series premiered in 2018 on TBS and received repeats on Adult Swim much in the way American Dad does, or Family Guy did, before the next new episode would air. The series moved to Adult Swim starting with season 2. It starred Rogers as both Gary and Mooncake, along with David Tennant, Coty Galloway, Steven Yeun, Tom Kenny, Tika Sumpter, Fred Armisen, Ashly Burch, Claudia Black, Ron Funches, Keith David and Vanessa Marshall.
It’s unknown what this will mean for Godspeed, which was intended to use much of the ideas left unused from the cancellation of Final Space, now that the rest of the series has some sort of outlet
