Get A Kick Out Of The 'Road House' Remake Trailer
Jake Gyllenhaal steps into the role made famous by Patrick Swayze in the 1989 original film
It’s time to gather again with your next of kin. Amazon Prime Video and MGM Studios have released the trailer for their Road House remake starring Jake Gyllenhaal, ready to tear your throat out and kick you in the ear.
The two-and-a-half-minute trailer sees Gyllenhaal as Elwood Dalton (as opposed to the original’s James, played by Patrick Swayze), who here is an ex-UFC middleweight fighter, who seems to have garnered a reputation for taking more hits than he can handle. Homeless, living in a disheveled car and fighting in underground circuits, he’s found by Jessica Williams, the owner of the bar she recruits him to work for. She says “A friend of mine suggested I come talk to you. I own a roadhouse out in the Florida Keys. Lately it’s been attracting the wrong clientele.” That “wrong clientele” is being sent by Billy Magnussen’s rich developer Grant, and includes an over-aggressive, assertive roughneck played by MMA fighter Conor McGregor in his film debut. Grant sends this onslaught of fighters to divert attention away from his plan to plan to “build a bullshit resort for rich assholes”. Basically instead of the small town magnate bulldozing local businesses, here it's the Instagram real estate bros pricing out the island/beach lifestyle and making it unaffordable. Arturo Castro is one of his lackeys, who had a previous match with Elwood.
The trailer also promises the scene filmed in Las Vegas during the UFC 285 ceremonial weigh-in, headbutts and boat explosions that are said to be director Doug Liman’s flair. “It takes a lot to get me angry,” Gyllenhaal’s Elwood says. “But when I am, I just can’t let go.” The cast also includes Daniela Melchior as ER nurse Ellie, Joaquim de Almeida, B.K. Cannon, Beau Knapp and Darren Barnet. It’s written by Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry, based on the 1989 original film’s screenplay by David Lee Henry and Hilary Henkin, with a story by Henry, Anthony Bagarozzi, and Charles Mondry. It is also produced by Joel Silver and executive produced by J.J. Hook, Alison Winter, Aaron Auch and Audie Attar.
The film is set to be released on Prime Video, much to Liman’s dismay and protest on March 21, making it more than ready to fit into a Jake Gyllenhaal Christmas, the Gyllenhaalest Christmas of all, if so need be. Road House.
