'Inside Out' Spinoff Series 'Dream Productions' Announced For Disney+ At D23
Is this the stuff dreams are made of?
When the movies are all in your head, maybe you’re ready to go to bed. The Disney Entertainment Showcase at D23 had a massive Pixar section fresh off the massive success of Inside Out 2, which chief creative officer was very thankful for. And he came prepared, fully unveiling a Disney+ spinoff series for the franchise called Dream Productions for the very first time.
Dream Productions takes place between films and is set in a studio where Riley’s dreams are made every night, on time and on budget. Some memories in need of extra processing are sent to Dream Productions, and when Riley falls asleep, all of her dreams are made like actual films. The trailer was not released publicly, but the logo at least was, touting “From the World of Inside Out”. Joy does give a little intro but it’s unclear if it’s actually in the show. Considering there’s nothing reported to the contrary it seems they did get Amy Poehler for a few lines. The types of productions put on in the dream employ a realistic Riley dummy and run the gamut of genres, including musical.
Docter previously teased the series in June, where he gives his own take on its premise “In the first film, remember we go to Dream Productions to see how Riley’s dreams are made? It semi-explains why they’re so weird. We’ve continued the exploration of the power of dreams and how they affect us in our waking life, as well. So it’s pretty cool.” He had also revealed the release window even then, saying “We have finished. It’s coming out next spring.”
Inside Out 2 is Pixar’s highest-grossing film of its 30-year feature history, only behind the 2019 The Lion King for all of animation. Because Disney treats the latter as “live-action”, it treats Inside Out 2follows the now-teenaged Riley as she heads to hockey camp and her entire emotional core of Joy, voiced by Amy Poehler, Sadness voiced by Phyllis Smith, Anger, voiced by Lewis Black, Fear voiced by Tony Hale, and Disgust voiced by Liza Lapira, are overtaken by Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser) and must find a way back to control before Riley goes down a bad path.
