‘Inside Out 2' Passes 'Frozen II' To Become (Celebrated As) Highest Grossing Animated Film Of All Time
Don’t cry, 'The Lion King' 2019 is still champion, but it’s not like they’re going to acknowledge it with more drawings if it gets dethroned
Disney is breaking its own records again, and this time it’s very emotional. Because the studio has categorized the 2019 completely CG-animated remake of The Lion King as live-action, they’ve anointed Frozen II as the highest-grossing animated film in history. Or at least they used to, because the film’s $1.45 billion gross has been surpassed by Pixar’s Inside Out 2 after just 6 weeks.
Inside Out 2’s current $1.46 billion gross is on a split of $601 million domestically and $861 million internationally, which launched on a gross of $294.2 million, the highest in Pixar history, from a split of $154.2 million domestic (from 4,440 theaters) and approximately $140 million from 38 international markets. It is of course therefore Pixar’s highest-grossing film and the 13th biggest film of all time, crossing a billion in just 19 days, the fastest ever to do so. The first Inside Out from 2015 grossed a still-fantastic $858 million for its entire run.
As is customary with highest-grossing films, at the very least on the overall list, there is always a congratulatory gesture from the dethroned to the new king. Pixar first wrote on their socials “We’re filled with Joy! Thanks to every fan around the world for making Inside Out 2 the biggest animated movie of all time. 💛🧡” with a message from director Kelsey Mann and producer Mark Nielsen that read “We are absolutely blown away by all the love for Inside Out 2 from around the world. Thank you for joining us on this incredible emotional rollercoaster.” Disney Animation then sent their congratulations on their socials, in particular quoting Pixar’s celebration on Twitter, saying “Everyone from Arendelle and Walt Disney Animation Studios is sending warm hugs to all of Pixar on their incredible achievement as Inside Out 2 becomes animation’s biggest movie ever.” The film still has about $200 million to go before supplanting The Lion King and may very well accomplishing it. It might finally make the debate irrelevant, but may still pose an issue for any film that wishes to surpass it in the future.
Inside Out 2 follows the now-teenaged Riley as she heads to hockey camp and her entire emotional core of Joy, voiced by Amy Poehler, Sadness voiced by Phyllis Smith, Anger, voiced by Lewis Black, Fear voiced by Tony Hale, and Disgust voiced by Liza Lapira, are overtaken by Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser) and must find a way back to control before Riley goes down a bad path.
