Jasmine Cephas Jones To Play Young Bernadette Stewart On HBO, DC Studios’s 'Lanterns'
Both of John’s parents now have their casting complete
From Saturday until late Thursday, HBO and DC Studios’s Lanterns had both flashback and present day John Stewart Sr. in J. Alphonse Nicholson and Sherman Augustus respectively. However, in terms of his wife Bernadette, we only had present day, played by Nicole Ari Parker. Finally, a week after Nicholson and two and a half after Parker, we finally have flashback Bernadette, and it’s Jasmine Cephas Jones.
While Nicholson was reported as playing young John Sr. in a recurring role, she’s reportedly just a guest-starring role. Maybe she has less episodes, like how Sam Rockwell has been on enough episodes of The White Lotus this season that he must compete in supporting categories and not guest. Her character description calls her a “resilient mother” and “forever the family fixer”. She is a perceptive, big-picture thinker who demands excellence from herself and her family. Older Bernadette was described thusly: “Formidable and tenacious, Bernadette refuses to give up, no matter how insurmountable the odds. At her core, she’s a fiercely protective mother who has worked her entire life to ensure that she and her family will not be passed over.”

Cephas Jones is best known for originating the roles of Peggy and Maria in Hamilton, winning a Grammy Award for Best Original Broadway Recording for it and was thus part of the proshot performance released to Disney+ in 2020. She recently starred in Origin from Neon, and in television on Starz’s Blindspotting, and #FREERAYSHAWN, which won her an Emmy Award for Outstanding Actress in a Short Form Series.
Lanterns stars Aaron Pierre as the present day version of Bernadette’s son John, the new Green Lantern Corps. recruit being paired with Lantern legend Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, together described as “two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.” Kelly Macdonald plays Hal’s reported love interest, Sheriff Kerry, who seems to be pursued over the course of the season, Garret Dillahunt plays “modern cowboy” William Macon, Jason Ritter as his son Billy Macon, Poorna Jagannathan plays Zoe, John’s reported love interest, and Ulrich Thomsen plays the villain Sinestro. Showrunner Chris Mundy, previously of Ozark, and co-writers and executive producers Lindelof and Tom King all developed the show. James Hawes directs the first two episodes and also executive produces with Ron Schmidt. The other directors are Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov, while the costume designer is Cynthia Ann Summers. Lanterns is the first live action series crafted for the new DC Universe and premieres in early 2026 on HBO.
