As 'Guardians' Wraps Up, Karen Gillan and Pom Klementieff Have Their Eyes On DC
'Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3' releases next Friday, ending the Guardians' stories and moving director James Gunn fully into his DC CEO role
Thursday night was the world premiere of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the hotly anticipated Marvel Studios film that not only closes out the Guardians series but is the final chapter for this specific team of Guardians. With director James Gunn wrapping up his Marvel duties, he can fully focus on the DC Studios CEO duties he was hired to in November, which includes his creative contributions in writing and directing projects, but that certainly doesn’t stop him from bringing his Marvel colleagues-turned-friends over, and now with the freedom, it looks like Pom Klementieff and Karen Gillan are already setting their sights on joining him, which Gunn has somewhat anticipated.
As with most premieres, there’s a red carpet, teeing up questions by the hosts about the future and its possibilities. Klementieff, who plays Mantis, revealed she and Gunn have already had discussions that led to plans being made for one specific character that she thought was “fucking cool”. However, it’s not quite set in stone yet.
Meanwhile, Gillan, who plays Nebula, has revealed to Total Film exactly the character she would love to play: Poison Ivy. The Doctor Who alum says “I always thought that Poison Ivy was really fun…maybe something like that would be cool.” Even then, she’d be content with something as small as “an alien that sits in the background of a shot and doesn’t talk” if she was asked, as she considers working with Gunn “one of the great joys” of her career. She even sees endless possibilities for Nebula to continue appearing, that she “would obviously love to explore more”, but she doesn’t know yet how, so like us, she’s taking a wait-and-see approach.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 releases in US theaters on May 5. Gunn’s DC Universe begins with its “Gods and Monsters” chapter, with the first project being the animated series Creature Commandos. He has already written the series’s 7 episodes, and it is set to premiere next year. The Amanda Waller-starring series Waller continues a throughline that started with the DCEU’s The Suicide Squad, which Gunn wrote and directed, and the first spinoff Peacemaker, which Gunn created, wrote all of and directed a majority of. He is also writing and directing the chapter’s first film, Superman: Legacy, set for release on July 11, 2025.
