'Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League' Is Not The End Of Kevin Conroy’s Career
The legendary voice of Batman for 30 years died in November 2022
The widely-panned Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League game from Rocksteady Studios and Warner Bros. Games was believed to be the final performance of beloved Batman voice actor Kevin Conroy, who passed away from cancer at the age of 66 a month prior to the release of the game’s first trailer in 2022. It turns out that this is not the case, to the surprise and relief of many.
Sure, Kill the Justice League is his final video game performance, but it has been reported there is still one gig in the can for the late actor. While a role in Batman: Caped Crusader, the first of two announced Batman animated series awaiting release on Amazon Prime Video was originally reported to be one, it turns out that isn’t the case either. Executive producer Bruce Timm confirmed Conroy hadn’t recorded any lines for the series before his death, saying “We were hoping to have him do a voice for the new show (and he was eager to do it) but sadly he passed away before we could make it happen.” It being considered a successor to the adored Batman: The Animated Series Conroy starred on led many to believe he was the starring Batman on it, however the way it was spoken about (and there not being any crisis on recasting him) solidifies that the role was most certainly not lead Batman and instead was likely in the same capacity as Adam West as The Gray Ghost on TAS, or Conroy’s previous Thomas Wayne appearance on Batman: The Brave and the Bold.
What does remain from the original report is that he has a role in an already-announced film whose nature is fully revealed by this very nugget: Conroy will be reprising his role as Batman/Bruce Wayne from The Animated Series in Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part Three. While Part One revealed the Tomorrowverse’s ties to the previous animated movie universe, it still wasn’t clear whether the trilogy would be the broader celebration of DC’s actual animated multiverse that the Arrowverse’s 2019-2020 miniseries was for the company’s live action productions. After all, Teen Titans Go! vs. Teen Titans made several of its own original universes in addition to the two of them and their Animated Movie Universe counterparts to take part in the climactic battle against Hexagon. Even if a looser interpretation gives leeway to different stages in the suit evolution through The New Batman Adventures and Justice League, it’s likely a story of this caliber won’t limit itself to the DCAU as far as inclusion of TV universes. But if there were to be Justice League Action representation, it seems it would have to be another hero, unless that Batman shows up silent (or his having lines is undisclosed). The trailer for Part Two confirmed some sort of appearance of some iteration of Batman Beyond, a creation of the DCAU who is entirely the mantle of Terry McGinnis, whose original iteration turned out to be Bruce’s son, which indicates the push toward broader acknowledgments will be gradual over that film before the big blowout in the third.
Conroy's publicist declined to comment, while comment from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, distributing the Crisis on Infinite Earths trilogy, is awaited. Caped Crusader has had no cast announcements over the two+ years since the series was first ordered for Cartoon Network and HBO Max before it was unceremoniously dropped, and that includes its Prime Video pickup. The remaining parts of the Crisis on Infinite Earths trilogy have been set for release within the remainder of 2024.
