Netflix Releases The Quenchiest 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Trailer
The trailer gives peeks at King Bumi, a shirtless Ozai, and Sokka’s trademark snark
It’s less than a month until Netflix releases its long-anticipated second-chance live action adaptation of beloved Nicktoon Avatar: The Last Airbender. After releasing a new main poster and several character posters, the streamer has released the full official trailer.
The trailer starts with Fire Nation ships and attacks, with a flight of Appa in between. The world needs the Avatar, as one Fire Nation soldier shows off immense power. Aang’s emergence from his icy stasis fires a beacon of light, and Sokka and Katara are blown back with disbelief. Katara decries the Fire Nation as Ozai is in meeting and Azula practices her archery. Zuko showcases his skills. Aang rides his air scooter and crashes, which doesn’t help to convince Sokka amongst Katara’s pleas that he’s “the guy”. Aang of course feels all the pressure and responsibility but doesn’t want it. Appa gets a nice hug. Aang and Katara have a nice laugh at Sokka’s commentary on the circumstances as Momo lands on his head. Battles, creatures and air glider flights galore. Peeks of the Blue Spirit, Jet, and King Bumi of Omashu highlight some of the show’s signature bending battles before the last footage sees Aang enter the Avatar State.
Based on the 2005-2008 Nickelodeon animated series from Bryan Konietzko and Mike DiMartino, this Avatar: The Last Airbender was ordered in 2018. It is set in a mystical world where people can manipulate, or bend, the elements. 12-year-old Aang, played by Gordon Cormier, awakens to waterbenders Katara, played by Kiawentiio, and Sokka, played by Ian Ousley from a self-induced century-long icy stasis to discover that his airbending people have been genocided. The Fire Nation is encroaching on global domination. As the Avatar, who can bend all four elements known at the time, Aang must bring balance to the world and works with his friends to defeat the efforts of Fire Lord Ozai, played by franchise alum and Lost and Hawaii Five-0’s Daniel Dae Kim and the Fire Nation.
Also featuring Dallas Liu as Prince Zuko and Elizabeth Yu as Princess Azula, the series’s supporting cast includes Kim’s Convenience’s Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as General Iroh, Prey’s Amber Midthunder as Princess Yue, Danny Pudi as the Mechanist supplying the Fire Nation, Ghosts and Free Guy’s Utkarsh Ambudkar as King Bumi, George Takei as Koh the Face Stealer, iZombie’s Hiro Kanagawa as Fire Lord Sozin, Casey Camp-Horinek as Katara and Sokka’s Gran-Gran Kanna, Arden Cho as bounty hunter June, Maria Zhang as Kyoshi Warrior Suki, Sokka’s eventual love interest; Sebastien Amoruso as Earth Kingdom rebel Jet, and James Sie reprising his role as the Cabbage Merchant.
Albert Kim serves as showrunner, executive producer, and writer. Jabbar Raisani and Michael Goi are executive producers and directors alongside directors Roseanne Liang (also a co-executive producer) and Jet Wilkinson. Dan Lin and Lindsey Liberatore serve as executive producers from Rideback. The series finally releases on Netflix on February 22.
