Netflix Unveils First Look At Live Action 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Series At TUDUM
A teaser and character photos were released for the adaptation coming in 2024 of the legendary Nicktoon
Netflix has released the first teaser for its live-action adaptation of the Nicktoon Avatar: The Last Airbender, confirming that it will premiere in 2024. The first images of its starring cast, Gordon Cormier as Aang, Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka, and Dallas Liu as Prince Zuko, were also shared. The quartet also presented to the attending crowd at the streamer’s Tudum fan event, held in Brazil on Saturday.
The teaser goes through the emblems of each nation, Water, Fire, Earth, and Air. The logo itself uses the original logo for the “Avatar” portion while the “The Last Airbender” is blockier and plainer. Said to be an “authentic adaptation” of the original animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender is set in a mystical world where people can manipulate, or bend, the elements. 12-year-old Aang awakens to waterbenders Katara and Sokka from a self-induced century-long icy stasis to discover that his airbending people have been genocided. The Fire Nation is encroaching on global domination. As the Avatar, who can bend all four elements known at the time, Aang must bring balance to the world and works with his friends to defeat the efforts of Fire Lord Ozai and the Fire Nation.
The series supporting cast includes Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai, Kim’s Convenience’s Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as General Iroh, Prey’s Amber Midthunder as Princess Yue, Danny Pudi as the Mechanist supplying the Fire Nation, Ghosts and Free Guy’s Utkarsh Ambudkar as King Bumi, George Takei as Koh the Face Stealer, iZombie’s Hiro Kanagawa as Fire Lord Sozin, and James Sie reprising his role as the Cabbage Merchant from the original animated series created by Bryan Konietzko and Mike DiMartino, which ran from 2005-2008 for 3 seasons and 61 episodes.
Said creators were originally involved with the project, however, they left in June 2020, just a month after the animated series was added to Netflix in anticipation of the series originally announced in 2018. What resulted was the creation of Avatar Studios, which has one film starring Aang and friends set for October 10, 2025, and several television series and subsequent films in development. The previous attempt at a live-action adaptation, 2010’s The Last Airbender, was so poorly received it resulted in The Legend of Korra a sequel series to the original animated series which ran for 52 episodes from 2012-2014. Netflix also released a trailer and release date for their live-action One Piece series at Tudum, while Nickelodeon has also made live-action adaptations of their Nicktoons in The Really Loud House, The Fairly OddParents: Fairly Odder, and The SpongeBob Musical.
