'Masters Of The Universe' Movie Casts Camila Mendes As Teela
The 'Riverdale' alum will star alongside Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man
From an eternity in Pop’s to the land of Eternia, Camila Mendes has been cast as Teela in Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Films’s Masters of the Universe, the film that brings the He-Man franchise back to the big screen after nearly 40 years.
Having broken out with a seven-season run as Veronica Lodge on The CW’s Riverdale which ended its run last year, Mendes has appeared in films like The Perfect Date with Noah Centineo, who was originally attached to play Prince Adam and He-Man in this very film before the languishing got too much. She also appeared in the 2022 teen black comedy Do Revenge that also released on Netflix. This year she starred in the films Upgraded and Música, and has been cast in the I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel that is doing what Halloween and Scream have done going by the original film’s name, and will shoot this fall. For Teela, she screentested two weeks ago, as did Clara Rugaard, Alexandra Shipp and Quintessa Swindell. Mendes posted a screenshot of Deadline’s coverage to Instagram, writing “Stoked to get yoked 💪🏼 still can’t believe this is real…thank you Amazon MGM Studios, Mattel, and Travis Knight for believing in me as your Teela let’s go to eternia!!!”
Teela is the captain of the royal guard and the adopted daughter of Man-at-Arms, the royal family’s weapons supplier. In some series, like Kevin Smith’s continuations Masters of the Universe: Revelation and Revolution, she’s suspected Prince Adam being He-Man, and also become his love interest. The plot of the movie, which will star Nicholas Galitzine as the Grayskull-empowered hero, seems to be in the midst of reconstruction as they’re being kept secret. Previously it told that 10-year-old Prince Adam crashes to Earth in a spaceship and separated from his Magical Sword, his one link to Eternia. After tracking it down for nearly two decades, Adam is summoned back home to defend it against Skeletor’s evil forces. That to defeat him, Prince Adam must uncover the mysteries of his past and take on the vast powers of He-Man.
Laika founder and Kubo and the Two Strings director Travis Knight directs from a screenplay by Chris Butler, following initial drafts written by David Callaham, and brothers Aaron and Adam Nee. Escape Artists and Mattel Films are producing. Masters of the Universe is set to be released in theaters globally on June 5, 2026.
