Matthew Lillard Joins 'Daredevil: Born Again' Season 2
Lillard brings his ultra instinct to the MCU presumably next year
Zoinks, don’t get mad! Matthew Lillard is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as part of the cast of the second season of Daredevil: Born Again season 2. The second season heads into production next week, overlapping as the Marvel Television series’s first season premieres its first two episodes on March 4 at 9 PM Eastern on Disney+.
The Five Nights At Freddy’s actor’s role, understandably, is being kept under wraps, as it’s unlikely his role wouldn’t be an effect of the events of the first season. Said season’s logline reads “Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), a blind lawyer with heightened abilities is fighting for justice through his bustling law firm, while former mob boss Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) pursues his own political endeavors in New York. When their past identities begin to emerge, both men find themselves on an inevitable collision course.” The ending of Echo saw Fisk start to consider a mayoral run, and it seems now he’s already won. It is inspired by the recent “Mayor Fisk” storyline in the Daredevil comic, written by Charles Soule and Christos Gage, with art by Ron Garney and Stefano Landini, and not the storyline with which the series shares its name. Cox has already clarified so.
Tony Dalton to Reprise 'Hawkeye' Role as The Swordsman In 'Daredevil: Born Again'
With Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man already wrapped up, Marvel Studios’s attention turns to its Daredevil revival, Daredevil: Born Again, which premieres on Disney+ on March 4 at 9 PM Eastern. There have been at least 3 30-second spots and two featurettes in just the last week. But here in particular, you’d think after more than three years of wo…
When Born Again was first announced, it came with an 18-episode order. However, during the retool that brought it to being a tighter continuation of the 2015-2018 Netflix series, it became split with nine-episode first season. It was unclear what other effects the retool would have on the series, but showrunner Dario Scardapane revealed in an interview posted Thursday with Collider that it only lost them a single episode in season 2. He said “At this point, it will be a nine-episode first season. We start shooting an eight-episode second season on Friday, and the future is unwritten. I don't know if the story necessarily ends at the end of the second season. I think the future's unwritten.” Of course, this is being brought up to clarify how many possible episodes Lillard’s second role can be. Then again even a series regular can miss an episode and still be considered a regular.
Lillard is the current voice of Shaggy Rogers in the Scooby-Doo! franchise, having taken over the role in 2010 and has voiced him in nearly every project since. He’s still hung around the Scream franchise, reprising his role as co-original Ghostface Stu Macher in the original 1996 film, recently announced to be reprising the role in some capacity in the seventh film next year. His return to horror villainy began with the Five Nights At Freddy’s film adaptation where he played William Afton, and is returning for the sequel set for release this December. On television he’s recurred on Bosch and Twin Peaks: The Return, and main roles on FX’s The Bridge and NBC’s Good Girls. His next film is The Life of Chuck, a Stephen King adaptation from Mike Flanagan. Both Lillard and Flanagan were part of Mystery Science Theater 3000 Turkey Day festivities this past November.
In addition to Cox and D’Onofrio reprising their roles, the cast includes Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle, the Punisher, the only other returnee confirmed before the creative overhaul. Said retool scooped Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson, Ayelet Zurer as Vanessa Marianna Fisk, and Wilson Bethel as Benjamin Poindexter aka Bullseye back up. Among completely new cast members Zabryna Guevara as Sheila Rivera, Nikki James as Kiersten McDuffie, Genneya Walton as BB Urich, Arty Froushan as Buck Cashman, Clark Johnson as Cherry, Michael Gandolfini as Daniel Blade, Margarita Levieva as Heather Glenn, Jeremy Earl as NYPD Officer Cole North, and Tony Dalton reprising his Hawkeye role as Jack Duquesne, The Swordsman. Obviously, there’s little telling who will even survive to the point that Lillard’s character, whoever he is, shows up.
Scardapane serves as an executive producer alongside Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Brad Winderbaum, Sana Amanat, Chris Gary, Christopher Ord, Matthew Corman, Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead. It is much likelier these arrangements will remain for the second season than the cast staying completely intact.
Marvel Television Pauses Development On 'Nova', Two Other Series
Something strange is going on at Marvel Studios. Marvel Television has paused development on three television series: Strange Academy, Terror Inc. and Nova.
