Miriam Margolyes Confirmed As Voice Of Beep The Meep On 'Doctor Who'
The veteran actress had been recognized in the trailer but had not been officially stated until now
BAFTA-winning actress Miriam Margolyes is officially part of Doctor Who’s upcoming 60th anniversary specials, the franchise website confirms. She will be voicing the Meep in “The Star Beast”, the first of the three specials, in particular adapting the comic of the same name.
Margolyes is best known as Professor Pomona Sprout in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and returning for Deathly Hallows Part 2, and has provided her voice for Babe, James and the Giant Peach, Mulan, Happy Feet, Flushed Away, and Early Man. She even voiced Chaz Finster’s mother Shirley on the original Rugrats. On being part of the legendary series, Margoyles said “I’m relieved I got to work on Doctor Who before I died. With sci-fi you never know. Thank you for making an old woman very happy.”
The Meep is a furry creature being pursued by the Wraith Warriors. Her casting was first reported by Metro all the way back in November, thanks to some sharp listeners of the initial trailer, and rumored even earlier than that in August, but today’s the day it was confirmed. “The Star Beast” will be airing in November, followed by “The Wild Blue Yonder” and “The Giggle”. How close “The Star Beast”, directed by Rachel Talalay, will air to the actual November 23 anniversary date is unknown as no release schedule has been made public. All three specials star David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor and the returning Catherine Tate as Donna Noble, and “The Star Beast” will feature Donna’s other family members as well, namely Jacqueline King as her mother Sylvia, Karl Collins as her husband Shaun Temple, and the late Bernard Cribbins as granddad Wilfred Mott.
“The Star Beast” will be the first Doctor Who episode to premiere internationally on Disney+, including the United States, while the series continues on its BBC home domestically. Reportedly, it will therefore be the first accompanied by a Doctor Who Confidential successor companion series, Doctor Who Unleashed.
