Morena Baccarin Is The Sorceress Of Amazon MGM’s 'Masters Of The Universe'
The second-try live action adaptation of the Mattel toyline also adds Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson as Malcolm aka Fisto
By the power of Grayskull, Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel’s upcoming live action Masters of the Universe has more casting. Deadpool star Morena Baccarin has joined in the role of The Sorceress, while Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, soon to be seen in Captain America: Brave New World, has been cast as Malcolm aka Fisto, a character who is not the North Star.
The Sorceress is the guardian of Castle Grayskull, its secrets and wisdom. She is also the mother of Teela, who left her in the care of Man-At-Arms due to the chaotic nature of the castle, as she is a conduit to the surging energies that dwell within the walls, and thus cannot leave it for long periods of time. The crystal that can circumvent that, when out of power turns her into the falcon Zoar. Her wide array of powers includes telepathy, telekinesis, clairvoyance, teleportation, large scale energy barriers, mystic bolts, illusion projection and the ability to polymorph. She’s who gave Adam the castle’s sword that transforms him into He-Man, and sends him on the quest to rescue long-lost sister Adora, who becomes She-Ra. She’s also much freer in the 2002 continuity. Baccarin, who has another Amazon MGM movie The Wrecking Crew upcoming with Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa, most directly succeeds Christina Pickles who portrayed her in the previous 1987 film starring Dolph Lundgren. The voice acting lineage began with Linda Gary, with recent portrayals including Susan Eisenberg in Masters of the Universe: Revelation and Kimberly Brooks in the contemporaneous CG reboot. Fisto is a strong warrior with a metal arm who was originally the protector of the forest. He is also skilled at trapping and training wild animals. Like many, the character was originally voiced by Filmation (the original series’s animation studio) founder Lou Scheimer. More uniquely he was most recently voiced by Ralph Garman for Masters of the Universe: Revelation.

In addition to playing love interest Vanessa Carlysle in the Deadpool movies, Baccarin’s latest films include the sci-fi thriller Elevation and Millers in Marriage. She can also be seen Fast Charlie, The Good House and Ode to Joy. On the television side, her breakout role was as Inara Serra on the beloved Fox series Firefly and reprised the role for the movie continuation Serenity. She’s got quite the history in DC Comics adaptations as well, voicing Dinah Lance aka Black Canary on Justice League Unlimited, Cheetah in an episode of Batman: The Brave and The Bold, and holding simultaneous long-term roles as the Barry-created, Thawne-used version of the AI Gideon on The Flash, and as Leslie Thompkins on Gotham. She’s also known as Adria in the later stages of Stargate SG-1, Anna, leader of the Visitors in ABC remake of V, as Jessica Brody in the first three seasons of Homeland, and Beatrice Baudelaire in “The End” of A Series of Unfortunate Events.
Jóhannesson will be playing Copperhead in this weekend’s fourth Captain America installment, sounding as if his character was retained even despite reshoots. Previous film roles include Infinite, Zone 414, Alpha and Bloodshot. His television roles include a recurring role on Game of Thrones and appearances on Succession, Those About to Die, Vikings: Valhalla, The Witcher, and The Last Kingdom.

The new Masters of the Universe movie stars Nicholas Galitzine as both Prince Adam and He-Man. Baccarin as Sorceress has Camila Mendes playing daughter Teela in a cast that includes Alison Brie as Skeletor’s top underling Evil-Lyn, Idris Elba as the kingdom’s trusted advisor Duncan, the Man-At-Arms, and Sam C. Wilson, Hafthor Bjornsson, and Kojo Attah as Trap Jaw, Goat Man and Tri-Klops, the henchmen to Jared Leto as Skeletor. The plot of the movie is still under wraps as the newer details are being kept secret, but previously told of Adam coming to Earth as a child, being separated from his Power Sword, finding it after many years and being brought back to Eternia once it’s found to fend off Skeletor. Laika founder and Kubo and the Two Strings director Travis Knight directs from a screenplay by Chris Butler, following initial drafts written by David Callaham, and brothers Aaron and Adam Nee. Escape Artists and Mattel Films are producing. It is set to be released in theaters globally on June 5, 2026.
