Wouldn’t you know it, my hunch was right. Just two days after Sony Pictures’s Venom: The Last Dance hit Netflix 120 days from its theatrical release, the streamer announced that Kraven the Hunter, the Aaron Taylor-Johnson starrer that has likely put an end to the largely-derided Spider-Man villain-focused films that have included very little Spider-Man and no Tom Holland-filmed scenes, will arrive on the streamer on Thursday, March 13.
Netflix posted on their socials “You're not reading this but Kraven the Hunter is coming to Netflix on March 13.” Opening in theaters on December 13, it will have taken 90 days from its theatrical release to hit Netflix. This makes it one of the outliers of Sony’s 2024 slate, as most of them get an extra month wait with 120 days for a significant majority of films. The early take does match however the other Sony Spider-Man Universe film, Madame Web, which had a Valentine’s Day theatrical release and a May 14 Netflix arrival. Kraven the Hunter was a straight-up critical and financial flop, grossing just $62 million globally, on a $25 million domestically and $37 million internationally. The apathy is real, leading Sony to focus on Spider-Verse and actual Tom Holland Spider-Man-starring films and finally put down the villain spinoffs. Probably for good.
'Kraven The Hunter' And 'The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim' Take Their First 8 Minutes Online Ahead Of Box Office Battle
The December 6 weekend pulled through on its to be quieter in terms of new releases, with the Kyle Mooney-directed Y2K probably being the most publicized but still only coming in 8th place. The next two weekends however have some pretty big pairs opening up, most pertinently December 13 seeing the releases of
The film that opened alongside it, Warner Bros. Animation’s The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim did even worse, but made it to Max on February 28, the day after the Kraven announcement, a 77-day wait. Its worldwide box office amounted to $20.4 million against a $30 million production budget, on a $9.1 million domestic and $11.3 million international split. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 opened the week after and arrived on Paramount+ 60 days later on February 18.
Kraven the Hunter is about Sergei Kravinoff, played by Taylor-Johnson, whose ruthless father Nikolai, played by Russell Crowe puts him down a path of vengeance with brutal consequences, and causes him to become not only the greatest, most-feared hunter in the world, known as, well, Kraven the Hunter. The film also stars Ariana DeBose as the voodoo priestess Calypso, Kraven's love interest, Fred Hechinger as Dmitri Smerdyakov, Kraven’s half brother and master of disguise the Chameleon, Alessandro Nivola as Russian mercenary Aleksei Sytsevich, aka Rhino, a version that is a human/rhino hybrid transformation; and Christopher Abbott as another mercenary and assassin known as the Foreigner. It’s directed by J.C. Chandor and written by Art Marcum & Matt Holloway and Richard Wenk. Sony Spidey mainstay Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, and David Householter are the producers.
'Moana 2' Chee-Hoos Its Way To Disney+ With Billion Dollar Waves
My wish for you is to find your way to Disney+ in March. Moana 2, the sequel to Disney’s most-streamed movie of all time, is headed home, premiering on the streamer on March 12.
