Nicole Ari Parker Joins HBO, DC Studios’s 'Lanterns' As John Stewart’s Mom
The 'Boogie Nights' star plays mom to Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart in the Green Lantern series
And just like that, HBO and DC Studios’s Green Lantern series Lanterns has brought mama into the picture. The series, in production since the end of February, has set has cast Nicole Ari Parker in the recurring role of Bernadette, John Stewart’s mother.
Bernadette already has a full character description, which reads “Formidable and tenacious, Bernadette refuses to give up, no matter how insurmountable the odds. At her core, she’s a fiercely protective mother who has worked her entire life to ensure that she and her family will not be passed over.” In this series, John is played by Rebel Ridge star Aaron Pierre, and described as the new recruit being paired with Lantern legend Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler. They’re both described here as “two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”

DC Studios continues a very good week, following its substantially-revealing press event showing the breadth of its slate. And for Green Lantern, it’s getting quite the overdue media resurgence. In that slate was the announcements of My Adventures with Green Lantern
Parker’s breakthrough mainstream film was 1997’s Boogie Nights, going on to star in such films as Blue Streak, Remember the Titans, Brown Sugar, Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins, Black Dynamite, and Almost Christmas. Her most major television role was starring as Teri Joseph on Showtime’s Soul Food for five seasons. She subsequently recurred on shows like Revolution, Rosewood, Chicago P.D., and Empire, the latter of which she turned into a series regular role for its final two seasons. She currently stars as Lisa Todd Wexley on Max’s Sex and the City continuation And Just Like That..., a series regular since season 2 as it heads into its third season premiering later this year.
Parker joins a cast that also includes Poorna Jagannathan as Zoe, John’s reported love interest, making her the other announced character she’s likeliest to interact with most besides John himself. Kelly Macdonald plays Hal’s reported love interest, Sheriff Kerry, Garret Dillahunt plays “modern cowboy” William Macon, and Ulrich Thomsen plays the villain Sinestro. Showrunner Chris Mundy, previously of Ozark, and co-writers and executive producers Lindelof and Tom King all developed the show. James Hawes directs the first two episodes and also executive produces with Ron Schmidt. Other directors on the eight-episode first season include Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov, while the costume designer is Cynthia Ann Summers. Lanterns premieres in early 2026 on HBO, as DC Studios’s first series to be born within its new DC Universe.
