As 'Nimona' Is Heaped With Praise At Annecy, The Public Gets Its Final Trailer
The orphaned Blue Sky film releases on Netflix on June 30
The long-awaited Nimona movie is just days away from its Netflix release, and from the Annecy International Animation Film Festival to more public-aimed early screenings, it is being adored. But as the festival was going on, the public got one more trailer, the official full one, and I’d like to finally get around to talking about it.
For the first time, the marketing touches on Ballister (voiced by Riz Ahmed)’s part of the story: He’s a fugitive knight accused of murdering Queen Valentin. Nimona and Ballister find each other to help each other set things right. As they hatch a plan to escape offices, he sees Nimona (Chloe Grace Moretz)’s shapeshifting ability for the first time, as she goes through multiple forms for what amounts to a success. That’s when Ambrosius Goldenloin (Eugene Lee Yang), fellow knight and Ballister’s betraying boyfriend, and aerial forces are mobilized. Nimona and Ballister are seen avoiding ground forces too. Ballister and Ambrosius duel and Nimona was mistreated where she lived as a child. She and Ballister are ready to kick ass in their alliance.
Linda Codega of Gizmodo called Nimona hilarious, visionary, triumphant in its queerness, and a reckoning. Pete Debruge of Variety praised its formula-thrashing inclusivity, its punk spirit, and subversiveness. Samantha Nelson of IGN called the film funny and tender. Brandon Zachary of Comic Book Resources called it a phenomenal achievement. The film also stars Beck Bennett, Sarah Sherman, Frances Conroy, Lorraine Toussaint, RuPaul Charles, Indya Moore, and Julio Torres, and is directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane from a screenplay written by Robert L. Baird and Lloyd Taylor. The story is story credited to the four of them, Pamela Ribon, Keith Bunin, and Marc Haimes. Nimona finally releases on Netflix on June 30.
