Netflix Has Released The First Teaser For Once-Canceled 'Nimona'
The film, which started out at Blue Sky Studios, releases on June 30
Two years after the film had been canceled and a year since moving to resume production, the first teaser for Nimona, starring Chloe Grace Moretz, has been released by Netflix.
In it, Nimona writes and draws a comic, displayed through low-framerate animation starring an ungrateful princess in a tower and a shapeshifter who goes from being one of the birds she orders to make her a dress to becoming a dragon once met with the princess’s attitude. Though not before breathing fire at her as the bird. Of course, what else are you going to do as a dragon but burn down the entire kingdom? The shapeshifter becomes a shark and a gorilla-esque, King Kong-invoking monster in all the mayhem and chaos to add to it greatly. Nimona takes great sadistic joy in her work, revealing a maniacal smile, irised eyes, and her dragon wings. This summer, a new hero takes shape, as we see her run through several animal transformations with Ballister nearby. It reveals the release date, June 30. That’s right, the film is just six weeks away and can be watched before and after Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, though Thursday previews do mean the latter is technically out first.
The premise Netflix gives reads: When knight-in-training Ballister Boldheart is framed for a horrible crime, he’s forced on the run from his own comrades, and into the company of a chaotic shapeshifter named Nimona, who might just be the very creature he was trained to destroy. Together, the unlikely duo will have to prove Ballister’s innocence — and maybe learn a little bit about each other along the way.
Based on the comic series of the same name by ND Stevenson, who serves as co-producer, the film was infamously scrapped by Disney in closing Blue Sky Studios in April 2021 (and with bigoted discomfort around the film’s LGBTQ elements), and rescued by Annapurna Pictures with animation moved to DNEG Animation last year. A poster was also released, giving a look at the logo without having to wait even partway through the minute-long teaser.
With Moretz as Nimona, the film also stars Eugene Lee Yang from the Try Guys as Ambrosius Goldenloin and Riz Ahmed as Ballister Boldheart, one of them was the knight originally tasked with killing her. The supporting cast includes Frances Conroy, Lorraine Toussaint, RuPaul Charles, Indya Moore, Julio Torres, and Saturday Night Live alums Beck Bennett and Sarah Sherman. It is directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane from a screenplay written by Robert L. Baird and Lloyd Taylor, with a story credited to the four of them and Pamela Ribon, Keith Bunin, and Marc Haimes.
