'Power Rangers' Reboot Series Not Going Forward At Netflix
Hasbro will be redeveloping the series, which will now be taken elsewhere.
Sometimes when it’s too quiet, it’s a developmental regression to non-verbal, but Angel Grove High never dies. The Power Rangers reboot series that has been in development for two years at Netflix, ending original continuity after 30 years along the way, is no more. Not only is the series no longer going forward at the streamer, but it is headed for creative redevelopment that franchise owners Hasbro will be shopping elsewhere.
Indeed, the arrangement that saw Jonathan Entwistle, creator of Netflix’s I Am Not Okay With This and co-creator of The End Of The F***ing World, in an Alex Kurtzman-esque position overseeing the development of both television and film enterprises for Power Rangers, building what he dubbed a “cinematic universe”, is now over. The writing was on the wall, as Entwistle was hired for it back in October 2020, but has more recently been busy elsewhere. He is directing next year’s franchise-unifying Karate Kid movie starring Ben Wang as the new titular kid as well as the returning Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso and Jackie Chan as Mr. Han. It is currently set for release on May 30, 2025.
The creative overhaul might have a lot to do with the lapsed contract of showrunner Jenny Klein, who signed a two-year overall deal with since-sold eOne in June 2022 not only for that role, but develop genre- and drama-based content. Klein had come from being a story editor for Supernatural, and writing, showrunning, and executive producing the NBC miniseries The Thing About Pam. She would go on to write for Prime Video’s Daisy & the Six miniseries and serve as co-executive producer.
Power Rangers finds itself in a somewhat similar situation to another toy-fueled franchise, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. Both franchises had significant non-original presence on Netflix for years with their respective libraries. Then, new seasons and series respectively with Dino Fury’s second season, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once and Always special and Cosmic Fury for Rangers and a CG reboot and an original series continuation (and a separate-continuity She-Ra reboot from DreamWorks Animation) from He-Man, were all Netflix originals. However, there were still bigger ambitions. He-Man had a feature film set up at Netflix that they rejected due to budgetary concerns. The film has since moved to Amazon MGM Studios who have set up a June 5, 2026 theatrical release directed by Travis Knight and starring Nicholas Galitzine.
