Punted 'What If…?' Season 2 Episode Gets First Look Before Season Finale
It’s not premiering until season 3, but at least we get to see a bit of it amongst it’s completed brethren
Marvel Studios’s What If…? wraps up its daily releases of its 9-episode second season on Saturday with “What If Strange Supreme Intervened?”, but it wasn’t equipped with every episode produced for it. Like how “What If…Iron Man Crashed Into The Grandmaster?” was punted to season 2, at least one season 2 episode was punted to season 3, and the one that most people brought up as the episode in question was one starring Red Guardian and the Winter Soldier, and that’s exactly what we have here, with the episode reportedly called “What If…Red Guardian Stopped the Winter Soldier?” but has not been confirmed. Still, the clip has been released.
While it can be assumed Sebastian Stan reprises his role as Bucky as he has in both seasons, David Harbour has yet to be confirmed for reprising his role, though Rachel Weisz did come back as his cover wife Melina Vostokoff in “What If Captain Carter Fought the Hydra Stomper?”. The clip runs nearly three minutes, featuring both of them as well as Ranger Morales and Bill Foster, as they’re out on the road eating French fries as they reach a checkpoint Foster is manning. Alexei is majorly laid back even as he deals with such a grumpy and serious Bucky. As their cover story collapses as soon as it’s built, Bucky pulls a gun as they’re asked to step out of the vehicle. They instead make their getaway and become pursued by the called-in authority. The adrenaline kicks in and Bucky pulls out his machine gun to fend them off. As Foster and Morales catch up, Alexei stands his ground. He never surrenders. They gain ground and we get a To Be Continued.
Strangely (or maybe not so strange) it ends saying about What If…? season 3 as “streaming soon”. So maybe the gap will be much smaller than it was between the first and second seasons. The season was originally announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2022, so hopefully there’s been enough progress in the 17 months even just since announcement that soon doesn’t somehow mean 12 months and can fit into 2024. There it would join the three series from Marvel Studios Animation already announced to premiere over the year. Besides, moving a second-season episode into it means the production timeline starts considerably earlier. Even though the episode wasn’t ready to be released as part of season 2, fans can take solace that they got to see it amongst where it would’ve been and have a taste until the official premiere happens.
