'What If…?' Season 2 Reprisals And More Synopses Revealed
Finally more hints to this week’s experience are here!
After more than two years, the second season of Marvel Studios’s What If…? has finally arrived, rolling out episodes daily on Disney+ for most of the rest of 2023 with “What If…Nebula Joined the Nova Corps?”. While we’ve had the full season’s episode titles for about a week+, only some had descriptions released. And on top of that, we never quite got that flashy video of who was going to be reprising their roles (from the films) like season 1 did, as studio head Kevin Feige didn’t confirm a second season until December 2019. But now we have an idea.
Jeffrey Wright’s return as The Watcher is obvious, but is the only cast created by the series included in the report. So the Mick Wingert and Cynthia McWilliams as Tony Stark and Gamora carry over on the punted episode and presumably any other appearances, but of course they didn’t originate the roles. “What If…Nebula Joined the Nova Corps?” has Karen Gillan as Nebula, Michael Rooker as Yondu, Seth Green as Howard the Duck, Jude Law as Yon-Rogg, Peter Serafinowicz as Garthan Saal and Taika Waititi as Korg. Other returnees include Clancy Brown as Surtur, Josh Brolin as Thanos, Benedict Cumberbatch as Strange Supreme, Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, Michael Douglas as Ant-Man Hank Pym, Idris Elba as Heimdall, Frank Grillo as Brock Rumlow/Crossbones, Jeff Goldblum as Grandmaster, Laurence Fishburne as Bill Foster, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Rachel House as Topaz, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton aka Hawkeye, Sam Rockwell, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man Scott Lang, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk, Kurt Russell as Ego, John Slattery as Howard Stark, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Stanley Tucci as Erskine, and Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff.
Giving a better idea of what the 1602 saga will bring, series director Bryan Andrews gushed about some of the work he’s done with these actors
“They’ve all been great. Cate Blanchett really sunk her teeth into this version of Hela we have. And, of course, Hayley Atwell as our Captain Carter—seeing that character go through what she goes through and keeps forging ahead—it’s amazing what Hayley brings to the table. And we had Jon Favreau come in and do a couple of versions of Happy Hogan and it was a blast. He’s amazing and really went for it. I asked for some wacky stuff in our 1602-inspired episode and he delivered in a big way—so much fun.”
“What If… Peter Quill Attacked Earth's Mightiest Heroes?” has The Avengers form 25 years sooner when Ego threatens Earth with a successfully delivered young Peter in 1988, formed by Howard Stark and Peggy Carter, with Hank and Janet, King T’Chaka, and Bill Foster. How does Tony Stark crash into the Grandmaster in the long-awaited season 1 episode What If… Iron Man Crashed Into the Grandmaster?” By challenging him to a grand prix-turned-demolition-derby death match. In “What If…Captain Carter Fought the Hydra Stomper?” Captain Carter’s mission to save Steve Rogers sets her on a collision course with new enemies. “What If…Kahhori Reshaped The Universe?” has the description “A Mohawk woman ventures into the waters of the Forbidden Lake to help save her people.” Meanwhile “What If…Hela Found The Ten Rings?” happens after she’s stripped of her powers and banished to Earth, lucking upon such a power source. And finally “What If…The Avengers Assembled In 1602?” and “What If Strange Supreme Intervened?” definitely lean on two-part finale vibes, as both are Captain Carter-centric, trying to undo some anomaly that strands familiar heroes and villains in the year 1602, and then discovering that the greatest threat to existence may be closer than she realizes. This explains her intervening on Thanos’s attack on Kahhori, rather than a team the latter forms from whole cloth.
Since What If…? isn’t getting primetime treatment, the season’s remaining 8 episodes will release at 3AM Eastern/Midnight Pacific on Disney+.
