Taika Waititi Leaving 'Thor' Behind For His Other Projects, Including His 'Star Wars' Movie
He says it’s gonna do the easy thing and piss people off
Marvel Studios is heading towards developing a fifth Thor film, but it seems it will go on without Taika Waititi, the director of the previous two films Ragnarok and Love and Thunder.
Waititi has been doing press for his new movie Next Goal Wins, and was asked about it. He responded "I wouldn't know if that's accurate. I know that I won't be involved." He would add "I'm going to concentrate on these other films that I've signed on for." Those films in particular start with Klara and the Sun, adapting the acclaimed Kazuo Ishiguro novel, with an adaptation of Alejandro Jodorowsky's graphic novel The Incal and his developing Star Wars movie to follow. “It’s still marinating,” he said. “I’ve been writing it.” Klara and the Sun follows Klara, a robot designed to prevent loneliness among teenagers, who tries to save a group of humans she lives with from heartbreak.
He just doesn’t believe with all that on his plate that he’d be available in time for the Thor series to continue with him, stating "So that's six, seven years gone. I'd imagine another Thor would be a lot sooner than that." He adds that it’s nothing about bad blood "But I love Marvel, I love working with them. I love Chris [Hemsworth]." He further says "I would never feel like they are cheating on me," He laughs in saying this as well. "We're in an open relationship, and it's like if they want to see other people, I'm happy for that. I'd still get back into bed with them one day."
Then, asked about his Star Wars movie at the Next Goal Wins premiere, whether it would still be recognizable as Star Wars, he replied “It will be… dramatic pause… a Taika Waititi film.” He then added “It’s gonna piss people off.” Next Goal Wins, from Searchlight, opened nationwide Friday.
