'Invincible' Creator Robert Kirkman Blabs Steven Yeun’s 'Thunderbolts' Role
Well it’s certainly gonna feel like a Sentry until the movie’s release with it being twice delayed
For Robert Kirkman, he’s certainly far from invincible. A secret like this may leave him the walking dead. The comic creator has blabbed one of his stars’ biggest secrets on YouTube recently as he mindlessly revealed the character one of his Invincible stars, Steven Yeun, is playing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Thunderbolts, a film that aside from what returning characters are appearing, very little is known about.
Kirkman was a guest on artist David Finch's YouTube channel when he nonchalantly said "My good friend Steven Yeun is playing The Sentry in a movie.” He chose to dwell on the subject, saying "He called me, he went in for a costume fitting. I don't think this is a spoiler, or anything that will get anybody in trouble. I don't know, maybe, we'll see. I don't care, I don't work for Marvel. What are they going to do to me? He called me and said, 'I just came back from a costume fitting for Sentry. I guess I only do superheroes that wear yellow and blue.'" On Invincible, Yeun voices Mark Grayson, whose superhero name is that of the comic and show. His history with Kirkman dates back to their days working on AMC’s The Walking Dead.
After Yeun’s casting for the film was originally reported, this was what he told Empire in March: "I don't know if it was explicitly on my bucket list. It was more the story, getting to work with Jake Schreier again, who directed Beef, and what his intentions were. The intentions of the particular character that they wanted me to play were very clear, and that's what drew me to the film." At the time, the role was described as “not only significant to this film” but had the potential for bigger going forward. His castmates include includes Harrison Ford as (possible President) Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes the Winter Soldier, David Harbour as Red Guardian Alexei Shostakov, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Wyatt Russell as John Walker the US Agent, Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr aka Ghost, Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov the Taskmaster, and Ayo Edebiri in an unknown role.
Sentry, whose real name is Robert Reynolds, debuted in his own comic series in 2000. His powers include superhuman strength, speed, and durability, as well as flight and energy projection. He’s teamed up with the Fantastic Four, but isn’t a close worker, certainly nor with the main Avengers team, but instead the sects like the New Avengers. Yeun’s other work includes Keith on Voltron: Legendary Defender, Nathan/Wingspan on Stretch Armstrong and the Flex Fighters, Steve Palchuk across the Tales of Arcadia series, Little Cato on Final Space, Speckle on Tuca & Bertie. Thunderbolts has accrued a full year delay from its originally announced July 26, 2024 release date, now positioned on July 25, 2025. Apparently livestream archives don’t embed, but Kirkman mentions Yeun’s Sentry role at the 1h21m mark.
