'Deadpool 3' Stands As Disney’s Sole 2024 Marvel Movie In Latest Shuffle
Well, the mystery of where it landed was far less drastic than one would expect, but for everyone else, well…
A few weeks ago, it was reported that Deadpool 3 was no longer able to meet its May 3, 2024 release due to the work stoppage from the AMPTP taking so long to give their talent a fair deal, but where it was going wasn’t known. Now with the broader picture of the other ripples, we know, as Disney made several moves in its release schedule, including a non-Marvel one.
Deadpool 3 is only moving to July 26, 2024, but unfortunately, while it was believed Captain America: Brave New World would move back because it had completed principal photography while Deadpool 3 was only 50% done, that is not the case. In fact, that May date is being left vacant, which means, like the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021, Disney will not have a Marvel film (or any film) on the opening weekend of the summer movie season. Brave New World is moving all the way to February 14, 2025, which dislodges the Blade reboot again, as it has yet to actually start production. It’s now set for a November 7, 2025 release that was previously reserved for a different unannounced Marvel film. Having been originally announced at San Diego Comic-Con with a release date of last Friday, this latest delay puts it back a full two years.
Thunderbolts, which originally had the July 26 slot Brave New World and now Deadpool 3 have since taken wasn’t able to get going either thanks to the Writers Guild of America striking since May and only getting their deal at the end of September. So it is leaving December 20, 2024 behind and moving to the equivalent July weekend in 2025, which is July 25. In its place is the one non-Marvel move of this batch, Mufasa: The Lion King. The Barry Jenkins-directed prequel to the 2019 CG remake of the beloved animated film, it arrives to December 20 from its original July 5, 2024 date. It will now be the film to face off against Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Before the mid-June shuffle, the slot was held by Avatar 3, which has since held onto the equivalent weekend in 2025, a December 19 date. Notably, Fantastic Four is unmoved from its May 2, 2025 date, allowing the studio to reclaim that very-clamored week.
The July 25, 2025 date also had something unannounced reserved, but it and the November 7 have not been reapplied to the schedule. While Marvel Studios had made its way to three releases a year, it’s Sony who is currently positioned to release three Marvel films in 2024 from its own Spider-Man Universe. Madame Web is still set for February 14, Kraven the Hunter was moved to August 30 in July, and Venom 3 was earlier this week moved to November 8, which was Deadpool 3 was assigned to from October to June. 2025 will mark the first time four wholly Marvel Studios films will release in a calendar year.
