'Star Wars' Disney+ Series Combine For 22 Primetime Emmy Nominations
Spanning 'The Mandalorian', 'Obi-Wan Kenobi' and 'Andor', they make up more than half of Disney+'s total
Star Wars is one with The Force and The Force is TV. On Wednesday, the Primetime Emmy nominations were announced, giving SAG actors a single day to celebrate before the strike was called. Once again, streaming dominated, but this article isn’t for the general nominations, the Star Wars franchise earned 22 nominations across three of its Disney+ series: The Mandalorian, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Andor.
While The Mandalorian had gotten the nod for Outstanding Drama Series in 2020 and 2021 for its first two seasons, it was Andor that got the nod this time. The Tony Gilroy-created Rogue One prequel received seven other nominations: Outstanding Writing For A Drama Series, Outstanding Cinematography For A Series (One Hour), Outstanding Directing For A Drama Series, Outstanding Music Composition For A Series (Original Dramatic Score), Outstanding Sound Editing For A Comedy Or Drama Series (One Hour), Outstanding Special Visual Effects In A Season Or A Movie, and Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music.
.While not getting the Outstanding Drama Series nod for a third season that was certainly not as well-received, The Mandalorian still received the most nominations of the trio, with nine. They are Outstanding Cinematography For A Series (Half-Hour), Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes, Outstanding Period And/Or Character Hairstyling, Outstanding Period And/Or Character Makeup (Non-Prosthetic), Outstanding Sound Editing For A Comedy Or Drama Series (Half-Hour) And Animation, Outstanding Sound Mixing For A Comedy Or Drama Series (Half-Hour) And Animation, Outstanding Special Visual Effects In A Season Or A Movie, Outstanding Stunt Coordination For A Drama Series, Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie, and Outstanding Stunt Performance. Man some of these categories hold a lot of separation-begging lumps.
Being a limited series, Obi-Wan Kenobi probably had less eligibility reach, but still garnered five nominations, including the highest honor: Outstanding Limited Or Anthology Series. The other four were for Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes, Outstanding Picture Editing For A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie, Outstanding Sound Editing For A Limited Or Anthology Series, Movie Or Special, and Outstanding Sound Mixing For A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie.
The other 18 nominations for Disney+ programming went to Light & Magic, Ms. Marvel, Hocus Pocus 2, Encanto at The Hollywood Bowl, Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium and Dancing with the Stars. The Primetime Creative Arts Emmys are scheduled for September 9 and 10, while the main ceremony is scheduled for September 18. Due to the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA both striking, these dates are in flux.
While Star Wars: Visions "The Duel" was nominated for Outstanding Short Form Animated Program last year, nothing qualified for the category this year, not even Tales of the Jedi. It’s unknown (ie I can no longer find) if anything from volume 2 was submitted for balloting or if it was held for the Children’s and Family Emmys, where The Bad Batch and Young Jedi Adventures will most certainly be found.
