Ruth Codd Clears Phlegma In Joining Live Action 'How To Train Your Dragon'
Codd brings the character to life when the film releases in June 2025
With DreamWorks Animation revealing its second 2025 film The Bad Guys 2 on Monday, it felt wrong to not acknowledge the third film set for release next year derived from its work: parent studio Universal’s live action How to Train Your Dragon remake. TikToker-turned-The Fall of the House of Usher star Ruth Codd has joined the cast of the film.
Playing village member Phlegma, this How to Train Your Dragon remake is Codd’s feature film debut and currently shooting in Ireland. The character was originally voiced by Ashley Jensen. On TikTok, she often made personal, off the cuff videos of whatever was on her mind, but also more structured talks in depth about her life with an amputated leg. Her acting career began catching the attention of casting directors for Netflix’s Mike Flanagan series The Midnight Club, impressing him enough to cast her in his next series The Fall of the House of Usher, where she played Juno Usher. The Irish actress’s next TV roles are kept a little closer to home with SkyTV’s Small Town Big Story and the Irish series The Dry.
How to Train Your Dragon stars Mason Thames and Nico Parker as Hiccup and Astrid, Gerard Butler reprising his role as Stoick the Vast, Hiccup’s father and the leader of the Viking clan, Nick Frost as Gobber the Belch, Stoick’s best friend and advisor, and Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James and Harry Trevaldwyn filling out Hiccup and Astrid’s friend group as Fishlegs, Snotlout, Tuffnut and Ruffnut. It is being directed by original trilogy director and animation veteran Dean DeBlois in his first live-action effort. He is also writing it, while producing it with Marc Platt, via his Universal-based Marc Platt Productions and its president Adam Siegel. Universal Vice President of production Lexi Barta is overseeing the film, which currently is set to be released in theaters on June 13, 2025, about 7 weeks from The Bad Guys 2.
