Live-Action ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Remake Casts Hiccup’s Allies
Hopefully you like newcomers, because they’re playing Fishlegs, Snotlout, Ruffnut and Tuffnut
The cast of Universal’s live action How to Train Your Dragon remake continues to take shape. Four more roles have been cast, and as Donkey sang in the original Shrek, you’ve gotta have friends.
The film remaking DreamWorks Animation’s 2010 classic has cast Hiccup’s main friend group, consisting of Fishlegs, Snotlout, and twins Ruffnut and Tuffnut. Initially as fearful as their elders of dragons, they too will learn to embrace and love them. Fishlegs Ingerman, an enthusiastic nerd with a dragon lore hyperfixation who expresses it through RPG, is considered Hiccup’s closest friend. He will be played by New Zealand actor Julian Dennison, succeeding Christopher Mintz-Plasse. Snotlout Jorgenson is Hiccup’s reliable but brash, overconfident, and rather unintelligent classmate, who was originally voiced by Jonah Hill and will be played by Gabriel Howell here. Tuffnut and Ruffnut were originally voiced by T.J. Miller and Kristen Wiig and will be played in this version by Bronwyn James and Harry Trevaldwyn.
This casting announcement doubles the film’s announced stars. Mason Thames and Nico Parker star as Hiccup and Astrid, Gerard Butler is reprising his role as Stoick the Vast, who is Hiccup’s father and the leader of the Viking clan, and Nick Frost takes on the role of Gobber the Belch, Stoick’s best friend and advisor. Dennison appeared in Deadpool 2 playing Fire Fist, ans well as Godzilla vs. Kong and starred in Hunt for the Wilderpeople. He recently wrapped a starring gig in A24’s Y2K alongside Rachel Zegler, produced by Hill. Howell was seen in the Netflix series Bodies. James is playing ShenShen in Universal’s two-part adaptation of Wicked, with Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, and Michelle Yeoh. She appears in Apple TV+’s just-premiered Masters of the Air and will also appear in Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17, which is awaiting a new release date. Trevaldwyn, also a writer and comedian, appeared in the Netflix film The Bubble directed by Judd Apatow and is a regular on the British version of Ten Percent.
The How to Train Your Dragon remake will be directed by original trilogy director and animation veteran Dean DeBlois in his first live-action effort. He will also be writing it, and producing it with Marc Platt, via his Universal-based Marc Platt Productions and its president Adam Siegel. Universal Vice President of production Lexi Barta is overseeing the film, which currently has a June 13, 2025 release date.
