The Family Has Gru A Child In 'Despicable Me 4' Trailer
It’s an incredible time for Illumination’s signature franchise as it returns to theaters this summer
It’s Gru, Gru Gru for the home team as Illumination has released the trailer for Despicable Me 4. The franchise returns to natural timeline progression following 2022’s Minions: The Rise of Gru and numerous Minions-starring shorts, including one currently attached to the studio’s Migration, in the 7 years since the last Despicable Me.
The film sees Gru, voiced by Steve Carell, settled down with his family, wife Lucy, voiced by Kristen Wiig, daughters Margo, voiced by Miranda Cosgrove, Edith, voiced by Dana Gaier, and Agnes, now voiced by Madison Polan, and a newborn son, Gru Jr., born offscreen, who is “intent on tormenting his dad” with favoritism towards his mama. Maxime Le Mal, voiced by Will Ferrell, has escaped from jail and is out for revenge against Gru with his femme fatale girlfriend Valentina, voiced by Sofia Vergara. With this new danger, Gru and the family are forced to go on the run and be hidden away in Mayflower, so don’t look for them there, they’re not there.
The trailer features a lot of food-based antics from the Minions, voiced once again by Pierre Coffin. Whether it’s a vending machine with soda or a microwave of popcorn, the Minions will have their fun. The soundtrack has transformed from “Sweet Child o’ Mine” by Guns N' Roses to Hall and Oates’s “Maneater” as a heist turns into a family affair and a guard honey badger causes problems. Other new characters in the film will be voiced by Joey King, Stephen Colbert (peace among worlds yeah!) and Chloe Fineman. It will also see one other return, with Steve Coogan as Silas Ramsbottom.
Despicable Me 4 is directed by Chris Renaud, who is an actual co-creator of the Minions and not with Dan Povenmire, and is co-directed by Patrick Delage, an animation director on Sing 2 and The Secret Life of Pets 2. The writers are The White Lotus creator and famed Ned Schneebly Mike White (who also wrote Migration) and Ken Daurio the franchise veteran who has written every Despicable Me film. It is produced by Brett Hoffman and Illumination’s founder and CEO Chris Meledandri. The film will be released on July 3, 2024.
