'Scream VII' Looking To Continue Courteney Cox’s Perfect Attendance
Spyglass and the actress are in talks to reprise her role as Gale Weathers for the sixth time in the horror franchise
Picking up the pieces for Scream VII after firing Melissa Barrera for being anti-genocide and losing Jenna Ortega to solidarity and a busy schedule has worked out far better for Spyglass than they probably deserve, getting original franchise creator and writer Kevin Williamson to direct and finding enough money to win back original star Neve Campbell, who sat out the sixth film after a lowball. Now, their attention has turned to the other remaining original survivor, Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers, and the two parties are officially in talks.
When we last saw Gale, it’s a year after her ex-husband Dewey Riley’s death. She did end up writing a book based on the previous film’s events despite saying she wouldn’t, much to Sam and Tara Carpenter (played by Barrera and Ortega)’s dismay and ensuing resentment, uneasing her at the very least. They do team up, and she does find the local theater turned into the Ghostface shrine. She’s taken out of the action following a Ghostface attack, after which she delivers one of the few Sidney mentions of the film inducing offscreen involvement. She survives of course.
Cox meanwhile is best known otherwise for her ten seasons as Monica Geller on Friends and six seasons as Jules Cobb on ABC and TBS’s Cougar Town, with leading roles on shorter-lived series Dirt and most recently Shining Vale. As far as film roles, she’s had roles in Masters of the Universe, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, and Zoom, voicing Daisy in Barnyard, but in the 11 years between the fourth and fifth Scream movies only had one feature acting credit, 2016’s Mothers and Daughters, though she did direct for a second time, 2014’s Just Before I Go.
