Shawn Levy’s 'Star Wars' Movie Is Being Written By Longtime Collaborator Jonathan Tropper
The 'Deadpool & Wolverine' director’s film in the storied sci-fi franchise has been in the works since 2022
With only a couple of weeks before Deadpool & Wolverine will set the box office ablaze, director Shawn Levy’s next major project, his Star Wars film, has had its writer confirmed, and it looks like he didn’t have to go very far to find one. The film is being written by Jonathan Tropper.
Tropper has a long history with Levy. Most recently, he wrote The Adam Project, the film at Netflix which first brought Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds to Levy, a hookup that would get Levy the Deadpool & Wolverine gig. Before that, Tropper also wrote the Levy-directed Warner Bros. 2014 dramedy This Is Where I Leave You and the 2017 dramedy Kodachrome, also at Netflix, which was Levy-produced through his 21 Laps banner. What Tropper has done on his own is mostly television. He created two Cinemax original series: the crime thriller series Banshee, and the very last, the Bruce Lee concept-based Warrior, which moved to Max. He was also a showrunner and writer on AppleTV+’s Jason Momoa-starring series See. Lately, he’s created its upcoming Your Friends and Neighbors starring Jon Hamm, Amanda Peet and Olivia Munn.
Deadpool & Wolverine, opening July 26 has some tracking services tracking a $200 million opening and others as the biggest R-rated domestic start of all-time, topping the original Deadpool‘s $132.4 million. Levy’s Star Wars film has been in the works since 2022. It hasn’t had any sort of concept reveal, falling outside the trio that the studio showcase at last year’s studio showcase, including Sharmain Obaid-Chinoy’s Skywalker Saga continuation with Daisy Ridley returning as Rey, and James Mangold’s film at the beginning of the Jedi, which he is writing with Beau Willimon. Currently, only Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian and Grogu has a release date, set to be May 22, 2026, while there are two unclaimed slots on December 18, 2026 and December 17, 2027.
