Heigh-ho, Heigh-ho, the dwarfs will stream in homes. After being mired in warranted and unwarranted controversy surrounding stars Gal Gadot and Rachel Zegler respectively, and rather underwhelming box office, Disney’s live action Snow White is (fittingly?) taking a short theater run, as the company announces that the film will be arriving on Disney+ next Wednesday, June 11.
One might find it odd that I’m talking about this film at all. The only time I covered the film was when it and Elio were delayed back in October 2023 (the latter since pushed back a week to June 20), toward the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike. And you’d be right. But regardless of my lack of enthusiasm toward the film that turned into a lack of coverage, it’s still a major Disney tentpole whose theatrical window is worthy of study no matter how long or short it would be at a time when studios and distributors are trying to fix their relationship with exhibitors. From its March 21 release, June 11 is just 82 days, which even Deadline points out. I did not source them because they turn their article into a Lilo & Stitch victory lap. Anyway, this is well below the 100+ days most major releases have gotten, and even a week below the 90-day window that’s been aimed for. For example, Captain America: Brave New World was the major release previous to Snow White from the studio, released 5 weeks earlier and arrived on the streamer last Wednesday after 103 days. A three-weeks shorter stint for the latter puts their Disney+ arrivals two weeks apart.
'Captain America: Brave New World' Readies Disney+ Hulk Out
Anthony Mackie headed to Avengers: Doomsday with the Rowdyruff Boys and Princess Morbucks on his chest, but now Disney+ is ready to complete the journey home for Sam Wilson’s first outing as Captain America. Marvel Studios and the streamer announced Tuesday, the day of its Ultra HD Blu-ray,
As for that underwhelming box office, it’s only at $205.5 million, with a $87.2 million domestic and $118.3 million international split. The film has had its box office performance reportedly attributed to its marketing, the source material “failing to resonate with younger audiences”, and poor word-of-mouth regarding its visuals, like the dwarfs being achieved through motion capture.
Snow White, the remake of the beloved 1937 debut entry of Disney’s animated canon Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs stars Zegler as Snow White and Gadot as the Evil Queen, with (voices and facial motion capture of) Jeremy Swift as Doc, Martin Klebba as Grumpy, George Salazar as Happy, Tituss Burgess as Bashful, Andrew Barth Feldman as Dopey, Andrew Grotelueschen as Sleepy, Jason Kravits as Sneezy, and Andrew Burnap as Jonathan, the replacement for the Prince from the original story. Without a Prince to wish would come, "Someday My Prince Will Come" is replaced with "Waiting On A Wish," a solo about her "hope to become her father's daughter and the kind leader she was raised to be." The film is directed by The Amazing Spider-Man series director Marc Webb and written by Erin Cressida Wilson, with its original songs coming from Oscar and Emmy-winning duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.
