'The War Between The Land And The Sea' Teaser Trailer Erupts Following 'Doctor Who' Finale
The miniseries will premiere sometime close to 'Percy Jackson' season 2’s December premiere
Being a season finale, “The Reality War” didn’t have a next time trailer for more Doctor Who. But this time, there was still something to show. The one spinoff ordered as part of the deal between the BBC and Disney, The War Between The Land and the Sea, a five episode miniseries that completes the 26-episode order had its teaser trailer released, as it heads toward premiere later this year.
Having been formally announced at San Diego Comic-Con in July, the teaser trailer is the first glimpse at the aesthetic of what was certainly looking to be quite dour tone-wise, quite the serious affair. It also gave us our first look at Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw in character for the first time. While they’re Whoniverse alums, as Alonso Frame and Tish Jones, both from the Tenth Doctor era, they were announced to be leading this miniseries as new characters, now known to be the human Barclay and the Sea Devil Salt respectively. As the synopsis holds “When a fearsome and ancient species emerges from the ocean, dramatically revealing themselves to humanity, an international crisis is triggered. With the entire population at risk, UNIT step into action as the land and sea wage war.”
'Doctor Who' Spinoff 'The War Between The Land And The Sea' Confirms Ruth Madeley And 'Torchwood' Reprisal
Oh this is going to be fun. Doctor Who has released the cast photo for its upcoming spinoff The War Between the Land and the Sea, following this week of read throughs and having been only partially revealed with headshots at the franchise’s San Diego Comic-Con
Indeed, The War Between the Land and the Sea was first reported as a UNIT-focused spinoff and still is, with Jemma Redgrave as UNIT leader Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, Alexander Devrient as Colonel Christofer Ibrahim, and Ruth Madeley as Shirley Anne Bingham, who had returned in the most recent series after being absent in the series between it and her debut in the prior 60th anniversary specials. With Colin MacFarlane reprising his Torchwood: Children of Earth role as General Austin Pierce, this entire set of regulars were Whoniverse vets whether they were continuing their characters or not. But that wasn’t going to hold up forever. The release lists guest stars Adrian Lukis, Patrick Baladi, Francesca Corney, Mei Mac, and Vincent Franklin, with Waleed Hammad, Iestyn Arwel, Hannah Donaldson, Manpreet Bachu, and Ann Akinjirin.
The War Between the Land and the Sea is directed by Dylan Holmes-Williams, director of last season’s “73 Yards” and “Dot and Bubble”. Current Who showrunner Russell T. Davies is the miniseries’s co-writer as well, with Who veteran Pete McTighe, who wrote Thirteenth Doctor-era episodes “Kerblam!” from series 11, “Praxeus” from series 12, the wraparound segments of the Tales of the TARDIS for The Mind Robber and The Curse of Fenric, and this season’s “Lucky Day”. Davies put out a statement that said “The excitement is beginning to build, as the Whoniverse expands. I can’t wait for people to see this magnificent cast in such a powerful, vital, epic story. Look to the seas!”
A co-production between Bad Wolf, the BBC and Disney Branded Television, The War Between the Land and the Sea will be released on BBC iPlayer domestically, and on Disney+ where available for the rest of the world, sometime in the final quarter of the year.
