'Sonic The Hedgehog 4' Got To Go Fast To March 2027 Date
A film by Amy Rose’s name would be just as sweet…but we still want Sonic
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is now available for purchase on digital marketplaces in the midst of a rather triumphant box office run. To Paramount Pictures’s credit, they rightly anticipated such, as when it first entered theaters for Thursday previews on December 19, it was first reported that they were prepping a fourth film in the franchise for a 2027 release. Tuesday, the film was dated, and fans will probably be very pleased by where it has landed.
The studio, even in the midst of the Skydance merger, has set Sonic the Hedgehog 4 for March 19, 2027. Being so far out, it’s not a very populated part of the release schedule at the moment, currently alone with no previous and following week releases to speak of either. It brings the franchise back to the early part of the year following the December excursion away from the realm of the first film’s February release and the second’s April release. Ben Schwartz, who stars as the voice of Sonic in the four films and reprised for the Knuckles miniseries, tweeted “💙Save the date 4 Sonic💙💙3/19/27💙”. So while Deadline says it’s at the stage of development that the director and stars aren’t even secured yet, the claim might be more on a technicality. Jeff Fowler directed all three films thus far.
The third film is the highest grosser yet, building on the momentum and pushing the franchise over the $1 billion gross threshold. 3 made $218 million domestically contributing to a $422 million global total, after 2 made $190 million domestic in a $405 million global total while the first surprised with it $148 million domestic and $319 million global totals. Of course, a certain plumber making $1.36 billion on a single film meant the record the first Sonic had for video game adaptations was thoroughly supplanted.
Team Sonic started out with Schwartz as Sonic meeting Tom and Maddie Wachowski, played by James Marsden and Tika Sumpter, becoming their adopted son against Doctor Ivo Robotnik, played by Jim Carrey, who has a doting assistant, Agent Stone played by Lee Majdoub. By the very end of the first film, Tails, voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessey was searching for him, and together they ended up allying with the initially adversarial Knuckles voiced by Idris Elba. While the third film saw Sonic face off against a vengeful hedgehog named Shadow, voiced by Keanu Reeves, his current whereabouts are unknown to Team Sonic, while at the very end of the third film the blue hedgehog encountered a swarm of robots that look like him, and saw the arrival of who we know as Amy Rose. She will most certainly be the new character of focus in the fourth film.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 also saw Carrey take on a dual role as Ivo’s grandfather Gerald, driven to destroy the world by the death of his granddaughter Maria, played by Alyla Browne, a death that also originally drove Shadow to team with him. Whether either Ivo or Gerald survived the climax remains to be seen. The film also features the returns of Tom Butler as his boss, G.U.N. Commander Walters and Adam Pally as Wade Whipple. James Wolk appeared as Walters back when he was just at Captain rank in flashbacks set in 1974. Natasha Rothwell as Maddie’s sister Rachel and Shemar Moore as her husband, G.U.N. agent Randall Handel only appear in disguise capacities for Tom and Maddie.
