The Fun Continues As Max Renews 'Fionna And Cake' For Season 2
How mathematical a renewal decision was this? The fun will never end.
Max is keeping the multiverse of Ooo very close. The Warner Bros. Discovery-owned streamer streamer has renewed Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake for a second season.
The third series in the beloved Cartoon Network-born franchise following the original Finn and Jake series and Distant Lands, Fionna the Human and Cake the Cat are genderswapped versions of the original protagonists, as introduced in their male counterparts’ series. Season 1 of the girls’ series would reveal them to be of a real reality created by Prismo, a cosmic being known as the Wishmaster. Voiced by Madeleine Martin and Roz Ryan, our heroes start in a magicless realm, but soon find themselves facing off against the Scarab (Kayleigh McKee) and so they enlist the help of former Ice King Simon Petrikov, voiced once again by Tom Kenny.
The multiversal nature of the story allowed season 1 to bring back Olivia Olson as Marceline the Vampire Queen and Donald Glover as her counterpart Marshall Lee. Same for Hynden Walch as Princess Bubblegum and Andrew Rannells as Gary Prince. And of course Finn put in an appearance, still voiced by Jeremy Shada. Showrunner Adam Muto wasn’t even sure a renewal would happen when asked in October the week after season 1 ended. The executive who greenlit the show was no longer at the streamer. Upon the renewal, Muto, who has been steering the franchise since season 5 of Finn and Jake, could proudly say this: “To know that the show will continue into a second season feels both wonderful and frankly surreal. Thanks to Adventure Time’s creator Pendleton Ward, the team at Max, the talented cast & crew and the passionate audience who made this possible.”
Sam Register, who as president of Warner Bros. Animation, Cartoon Network Studios and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe serves as executive producer on the series with Muto and Frederator studios founder Fred Seibert, remarked how Fionna and Cake gave “all the familiar joys” of the show’s setting as it moved the franchise in a positive direction. He thanked Muto and the team for elevating the series with its storytelling and expressed excitement for what’s coming next.
Suzanna Makkos, who is executive vice president of original comedy and adult animation at Max and Adult Swim said “As proud stewards of the beloved Adventure Time brand, we have been delighted to dig deeper into the world through the Fionna and Cake lens. We look forward to following them on the next chapter of their journey!”
