'The Sandman' Readies Its Sleep With Split Final Season July Rollout
Look! Up in the sky! Oh you were expecting Superman? Dream on
Netflix is doing that split season of closely released batches thing again, like Cobra Kai, Stranger Things, Bridgerton, Emily in Paris and quite a few others lately. This time it’s the DC Comics adaptation with the source material from a disgraced writer, The Sandman. Its second and final season will be released in July. Spanning 11 episodes all directed by Jamie Childs, the streamer revealed Thursday they will be releasing six of them on July 3, and the last five three weeks later on July 24. A teaser trailer was released that announced the dates at the very end rather than during.
The season’s logline reads “After a fateful reunion with his family, Dream of the Endless (Tom Sturridge) must face one impossible decision after another as he attempts to save himself, his kingdom, and the waking world from the epic fallout of his past misdeeds. To make amends, Dream must confront longtime friends and foes, gods, monsters, and mortals. But the path to forgiveness is full of unexpected twists and turns, and true absolution may cost Dream everything. Based on the beloved award-winning DC comic series, the second season of The Sandman will tell Dream’s story arc in full to its thrilling conclusion.”
Neil Gaiman Allegations Bring 'The Sandman' A Cancellation At Netflix
The entertainments industry is officially putting its Neil Gaiman ties to sleep. They are joined by Esmé Creed-Miles as Delirium, Adrian Lester as Destiny, Barry Sloane as “The Prodigal”, Ruairi O’Connor as Orpheus, Freddie Fox as Loki, Clive Russell as Odin, Laurence O’Fuarain as Thor, Ann Skelly as Nuala, Douglas Booth as Cluracan, Jack Gleeson as Puck, Indya Moore as Wanda and Steve Coogan as the voice of Barnabas the dog.
When the show’s end was announced, showrunner Allan Heinberg put out a blanket statement that read “The Sandman series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season. We are extremely grateful to Netflix for bringing the team all back together and giving us the time and resources to make a faithful adaptation in a way that we hope will surprise and delight the comics’ loyal readers as well as fans of our show.” Reportedly the second season was intended to be the last prior to filming, allegedly due to the show’s costliness and prior to the sexual assault revelations surrounding the book’s author Neil Gaiman, who was an involved executive producer on the series.
