'The Wild Robot' Peacock Streaming Date Revealed
'Wicked' may have just gotten its home release, but even Brightbill deserves a chance to fly to streaming
In the midst of what might be a very fruitful awards season, Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot is ready to light up households as it comes to roost with Peacock. The CG-animated film starring Lupita Nyong’o and Kit Connor will arrive on the streamer in just three weeks on January 24.
Having opened September 27, The Wild Robot’s 120 days in theaters matches that of its 2024 Universal peers Despicable Me 4, Twisters, and The Fall Guy, held more than two weeks later than Kung Fu Panda 4. This should mean that a four month stint on the NBCUniversal-owned streamer will bring it to Netflix in time for Memorial Day, and back to Peacock in spring 2026. Prime Video by next summer? The film hit the digital marketplace for purchasable streaming in mid-October, with physical releases on Blu-ray and DVD on December 3. By comparison, Transformers One, the robot movie it was originally going to open directly up against the previous week (September 20), arrived on Paramount+ after just 56 days on November 15.
Based on Peter Brown’s New York Times bestseller and directed by How to Train Your Dragon and Lilo & Stitch director Chris Sanders, The Wild Robot follows ROZZUM unit 7134 or “Roz”, a futuristic robot that comes ashore to a deserted island, voiced by Nyong’o, kickstarting “a tale of survival and discovery begins befriending a close-knit group of misfit animals, who slowly become family. Soon enough, she also becomes the unexpected protector of an orphaned gosling, whom she names Brightbill, voiced by Connor. Together they struggle to survive the harsh environment, succeeding with the help of the animals. They find themselves defending the island from a robotic invasion by Roz’s manufacturer, Universal Dynamics, looking to bring her back to civilization by any means necessary.
The cast also features Pedro Pascal as Fink, the mischievous and well-meaning red fox that Roz helped first, Bill Nighy as Longneck, an elderly Canada goose who helped in Brightbill’s flight lessons, Mark Hamill as the fearsome grizzly bear Thorn, Catherine O’Hara as Pinktail, who provides Roz early parenting advice, Matt Berry as Paddler, a neurotic beaver fixated on his work on a tree, Ving Rhames as Thunderbolt, the peregrine falcon who actually gives Brightbill his flying lessons, and Stephanie Hsu as Vontra, as in Virtual Observational Neutralizing Troublesome Retrieval Authority, the drone-esque robot Universal Dynamics sent to bring Roz back to them.
Sanders revealed in October that a sequel was already in development, saying “100% yes there are absolutely plans for a second one” at Deadline Contenders. Which makes sense, as Brown’s book was the first in a trilogy. The Wild Robot came home having grossed $324.3 million at the global box office on a split of $143.2 million domestically, and $181.1 million internationally, on the back of a $35.8 million domestic debut weekend that exceeded expectations. However those won’t be its final box office numbers. Though it might still be close enough. On Sunday, DreamWorks Animation socials revealed that the film would be returning to theaters on January 17. It is unclear if it’s just for the week until it streams.
