Jonny Coyne’s Imperial Warlord Returning In 'The Mandalorian & Grogu'
The lore ward is letting loose for the next 'Star Wars' movie
Holo at ya boy. Jonny Coyne, who played the Imperial Warlord on the Shadow Council seen in the Disney+ series The Mandalorian, is set to reprise the role in creator Jon Favreau’s film follow-up The Mandalorian & Grogu.
The Shadow Council operates secretly against the New Republic, and met holographically in the seventh episode of the series’s third season. He and other Imperial ranking officials meet with Giancarlo Esposito’s Moff Gideon who reports the Mandalorians’ plans to take back their home planet, Mandalore, while also questioning the location of Admiral Thrawn. Coyne’s Warlord tells the group about the opportunities in “plundering the hyperspace lanes.” He’s then accused by Captain Gilad Pellaeon that his “hit and run operations are gaining too much notice.” While the size of Warlord’s role in the film is unknown, if it’s big enough it could feel like Powers Boothe’s World Security Council member in The Avengers eventually unveiled as Gideon Malick when reintroduced on Agents of SHIELD.
Coyne’s recent film credits include The Family Plan, Beirut, Nightcrawler, and Bodies. As a co-star in the ensemble of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, with Viola Davis and the late Chadwick Boseman, he was nominated for a SAG ensemble award. Coyne’s television roles include playing corrupt U. S. Marshal and drug kingpin Ian Garvey in NBC’s drama The Blacklist, the Allfather on AMC’s comic book adaptation and supernatural dramedy Preacher, and the network’s Turn and CBS’s Mom. His most notable series regular role is as Edwin James in J. J. Abrams’ short-lived FOX series Alcatraz, which also starred Jorge Garcia and Sam Neill.
Favreau co-wrote the screenplay with Dave Filoni. The film stars Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin, Sigourney Weaver and Jeremy Allen White as Rotta the Hutt. Droidsmith Babu Frik from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, voiced by Shirley Henderson, has a cameo as does fan-favorite Zeb from the Rebels animated series. The Mandalorian & Grogu is set to be released in theaters on May 22, 2026.
