Jeremy Allen White Goes From 'The Bear' To The Hutts In 'The Mandalorian & Grogu'
The next 'Star Wars' film is officially cooking with its casting
Jeremy Allen White is ready for his tenth Tatooine freeze-out. The Emmy-winning star of The Bear has joined the cast of the next Star Wars film, The Mandalorian & Grogu as the voice of Rotta the Hutt, Jabba’s son. The character was previously a focal point of the franchise’s only animated film thus far, 2008’s Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Lucasfilm did not confirm the casting.
As a baby Huttlet, Rotta is kidnapped by the Confederacy of Independent Systems, led by Count Dooku, with the help of Rotta’s great-uncle, Ziro the Hutt. It is part of an effort to discredit the Jedi Order and disrupt negotiations between the Galactic Republic and the Hutts. Anakin Skywalker and his new Padawan Ahsoka Tano are then tasked with rescuing Rotta. The so-called “Mandoverse” realm of the franchise takes place after the fall of the Emperor, and therefore takes place decades after that initial appearance.
The Mandalorian & Grogu is the film continuation of Star Wars’s first live action television series The Mandalorian, starring Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin, the title character and a warrior who is tasked with caring for Grogu, a deceptively young-looking member of Yoda’s species. A Disney+ launch title in November 2019, three seasons have been made and aired so far, ultimately becoming a flagship for the streamer. Its first spinoff series, The Book of Boba Fett revealed that Jabba’s death left a power vacuum among the organized crime bosses on Tatooine; two of Jabba’s cousins made a play for his territory, only to be defeated by Fett himself, played by Temuera Morrison, who takes over instead.
White finest came to prominence on the Showtime series Shameless, but broke out as chef Carmen "Carmy" Berzatto the lead of FX and Hulu’s The Bear, which has gained much awards acclaim despite highly disputed comedy placement. Having starred in The Iron Claw, White will star as Bruce Springsteen in the “Born to Run” singer’s own biopic Deliver Me from Nowhere.
Directed by series creator Jon Favreau, The Mandalorian & Grogu also stars Sigourney Weaver and is set to be released on May 22, 2026 as the first film in the franchise since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. The film is produced by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and chief creative officer Dave Filoni.
