Uzumaki Spirals Into Toonami With September Premiere
One final teaser was released at San Diego Comic-Con, as the five-year journey marches toward its end
It was a busy July for Adult Swim’s four-episode miniseries adaptation of Junji Ito’s horror manga Uzumaki. Beginning with the English cast reveal at Anime Expo and then having its rollout announced with a teaser released at San Diego Comic-Con, it’s everything after much silence since 2022 in this 5 year journey that is finally coming to an end. The network has announced that it will premiere on Toonami Saturday, September 28 at 12:30 AM, not getting the leadoff midnight slot because Rick and Morty: The Anime will be in that slot 7 episodes through its first season.
However, this does not tell the entire story. Because like Rick and Morty: The Anime, Uzumaki will be getting subbed and dubbed airings. Its English dub airings will be following the former’s in the Thursday 12:30 AM timeslot starting October 3 (again, Rick and Morty: The Anime has midnight). Unlike its timeslot partner however, this means Uzumaki will run sub-first, Toonami-forward. Being a four-episode miniseries when Rick and Morty: The Anime is on episode 7 means their finales will run together on Toonami. At the same time, being so small means it will likely not get the post-season full-season marathon treatment My Adventures with Superman recently got. But the anime grandpa might. It also brings it through much of October, perfectly for the spooky season. Apparently, both the sub and the dub versions will be available next day on Max relative to the sub premiere, so it seems Rick and Morty: The Anime will do the same relative to the dub.
Uzumaki is about the people of the fictional Kurōzu-cho, plagued by a supernatural curse involving spirals. They form in everything, from a strange whirlwind to billowing smoke from the crematorium, to the residents themselves being unnaturally contorted while their eyes and tongues take the shape too. Kirie Goshima, a high school girl born and raised in the town, is given an opportunity by former classmate Shuichi Saito urging “Let’s leave this town together”, attempting to escape the curse but can they truly do so?
The English cast includes Suzume and Zom 100’s Abby Trott as Kirie, Infinity Train and Breadwinners star Robbie Daymond, lately of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War and frankly numerous animated projects voices Shuichi. Hyperforce Black Ranger Vesper Vazquez and Ladybug Marinette Dupain-Cheng herself Cristina Vee voices Azami Kurotani, while er Miraculous co-star Max Mittelman voices Katayama. There’s also Doug Stone as Kirie's father, Aaron LaPlante as Shuichi's father, and Digimon and South Park legend Mona Marshall as Shuichi's mother.
It was five years ago this month that the first teaser was released, and now, as mentioned, San Diego Comic-Con will likely have brought the last. An official trailer is likely to follow closer to premiere. Uzumaki is produced by Adult Swim with Jason DeMarco is executive producer in partnership with Production I.G USA.
