'Rick And Morty: The Anime' Gets A Wubba Lubba Dub & Sub Rigamarole-Out On Adult Swim
Grass tastes bad, but it’s burger time in just a few weeks for the scientist and his multiversal grandson
Shum shum schlipidy dop! After releasing more early preview scenes than I was able to keep up with, Adult Swim has released the trailer for Rick and Morty: The Anime and revealed its multi-language release strategy.
Rick and Morty: The Anime’s English dub will get the Thursday at midnight timeslot, premiering August 15, while the subtitled version gets the midnight Saturday Toonami slot on August 17, being the only subbed show on the lineup currently. With My Adventures with Superman season 2 just ending, it’s getting a full-season marathon, followed by a Demon Slayer Mugen Train arc the following week, while August 10 is still unknown. Unlike the show it was born from, it’ll be available next day on Max, though it’s unclear whether both versions will drop on the Friday. Here is the latest of the four or five sneak peeks released since I last covered.
The 10-episode first season will see Rick relax in a pseudo-world between multiverses, Summer help Space Beth fight the evil Galactic Federation, and Morty fall in love with a mysterious girl who turns out to be an atemporal being. There’s all sorts of mechs, monsters, and super suits, and continued dealings with the President, Bird Person and even Mr. Nimbus. Jerry gets a taste of the Mindblowers!
The cast of the main show, at least for the English dub, will not be reprising their roles. For the English version, Rick and Jerry will both be voiced by Joe Daniels, meaning there’s a share in voice actors for the franchise for the first time since Justin Roiland was fired. They’re respectively voiced by Youhei Tadano and Manabu Muraji in the Japanese. Morty is voiced by Keisuke Chiba and Gabriel Regojo, Summer by Akiha Matsui and Donna Bella Litton, and Beth (both domestic and Space?) by Takako Fuji and Patricia Duran.
Rick and Morty: The Anime is directed by Takashi Sano, produced for Adult Swim by Sola Entertainment, with Jason Demarco, Adult Swim’s Head of Action and Anime and Joseph Chou the CEO of Sola Entertainment serving as executive producers.
“Takashi Sano, in addition to being a super-talented director, is also a huge Rick and Mortyfan,” said Michael Ouweleen, President, Adult Swim. “He’s the perfect person to give us all this alternate version of this amazing show. And the perfect way to launch this series is by doing our favorite thing — drive ridiculous vehicles around and come see all of you in person. Keep an eye out for our Rickmobile and Mortymobile as they cruise across the country and wrack up various toll tickets to celebrate the expansion of the Rick and Morty universe.”
Both vehicles hit the road for a multi-city nationwide tour starting this weekend at San Diego Comic-Con, giving the chance to watch the first episode early, score exclusive merchandise and photo ops. It ends in Adult Swim’s hometown of Atlanta, GA. Another sneak peek will come during SDCC festivities, with a YouTube livestream called “Night of New” tonight at 10:30 PM Eastern.
