'Wicked: For Good' Trailer Holds The Space Between Elphaba And Glinda
We’re off to see the witches, the witches that sing every note
Who is Our Wizard, Lies? Who can say if you hope to keep safe from the pain? The world may very well be changed for the better as Universal Pictures released the trailer for Wicked: For Good, the second part of their adaptation of the Wicked musical, which released its first part last November 22 and will be concluded on November 21. The trailer in fact played after a special rerelease of the first film, and was first shown to exhibitors at CinemaCon.
“Elphaba, I know you’re out there,” Glinda, played by Ariana Grande, says in voiceover, emerging from Emerald City castles at the cracking of the windows, pleading with her to come in before she’s spotted. It summons Elphaba, played by Cynthia Erivo to the balcony, reiterating her belief that there’s no going back. “This is about the Wizard and I,” the targeted witch says from her hideout, as propaganda posters go up. Elphaba is studying up on the Grimmerie, the flying monkeys head out. Glinda’s at least happy to see Fiyero but his team is sent after Elphaba. The Wizard (Jeff Goldblum) has his charade setup upgraded and fiddled with. It has a zoetrope! “No Good Deed” swells up. Elphaba skywrites “OUR WIZARD LIES” before making her landing. “Elphaba, they’re coming for you,” Glinda warns in voiceover as we return to the night the trailer started in. The trailer then shifts into its “For Good”-backed portion, the big climactic duet between Glinda and Elphaba. “Think about what we can do together,” Glinda reminds. Cut to her wedding to Fiyero. The Wizard demands of Dorothy and pals the Lion, Tin Man and Scarecrow, “Bring me the broom of the Wicked Witch of the West!” Fiyero is seen reaffirming his loyalty to Elphaba and betraying the Wizard, giving her her broom, because he has changed too. It closes with Elphaba telling Glinda she’s the only friend she’s ever had. After a tearful hug between them, she’s packing up her hat which flies into her hand, and her broom into the other. “I’m off to see the wizard!” She declares before being chased once again.
Elphaba And Glinda Reunite In 'Wicked: For Good' First Footage At CinemaCon
Who can say if attendance is better? CinemaCon Wednesday was a bit lighter for the mainstream, especially those turned off by Christian media as the day portion had Angel Studios, but the night was headlined by Universal, with DreamWorks Animation and
Yes indeed, Wicked: For Good will have the overlaps with The Wizard of Oz, as director Jon M. Chu told Vanity Fair in a feature preceding the release of the trailer. “That intersection is the place that we were first introduced into Oz. We tread lightly, but try to make more sense of how it impacts our girls and our characters than maybe the show does.” Chu assured that Dorothy’s inclusion in the screen adaptation won’t pull focus from Elphaba and Glinda’s story. “We’re delicate. We’re delicate. We’re delicate,” he assured with great emphasis.
For Good has wrapped production and retains Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, and Ethan Slater as Boq, and Marissa Bode as Nessarose. Winnie Holzman, the musical’s book writer who adapted Gregory Maguire’s novel for it, wrote the For Good script with co-writer Dana Fox. Broadway musical songwriter Stephen Schwartz executive produces alongside Jared LeBoff and David Nicksay, while producers include Marc Platt and David Stone.
