'Wicked' Peacock Streaming Date Confirmed
It might not be popular that it’s arriving at the same rate as the rest of Universal’s 2024 output, but it’s the reality
I told you so, I warned you so. Peacock has confirmed that Wicked, the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation of all time, will not be defying anything, at least in terms of when it will arrive on the service. The streamer has confirmed a March 21 arrival for the ten Oscar-nominated film starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. Just a little over four short weeks for the Emerald City.
When I covered the title change for the film’s sequel, known as Wicked: For Good, back in January, I had given the date as the likeliest. DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot, also from Universal Pictures had just gotten its streaming date for the very same service. Peacock has been very consistent with 2024’s Universal films receiving 120-day waits before getting to Peacock, and, further reinforced by the subsequent arrival of Piece by Piece, it’s no different here. However I left open the idea that maybe they would allow it to come sooner, as drastic as before the March 2 Academy Awards. That has evidently not come to pass, and it’s better for it.
Wicked, adapting the Tony-winning Broadway musical based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, telling the origin story of the Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz, has grossed a sentimental $727 million, a split of $472.5 million domestic, and $255.3 million internationally. It won this year’s Golden Globe for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement with its ten Oscar nominations being for Best Picture, Best Actress for Erivo as Elphaba, Supporting Actress for Grande as Glinda, Costume Design, Film Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling, Original Score, Production Design, Sound and Visual Effects. Erivo was also named host of the 78th Tony Awards Wednesday afternoon.
Jon M. Chu directed both films from a script by the stage show’s book writer Winnie Holzman and composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz. Marc Platt produced through his Universal-based production company Marc Platt Productions, alongside David Stone. The film also stars Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Ethan Slater as Boq, Bowen Yang as Pfannee, Peter Dinklage as Dr. Dillamond, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard and Marissa Bode as Nessarose. Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, the Broadway originators of Elphaba and Glinda, appear in rather extensive cameos.
Everyone deserves a chance to watch. Wicked’s March 21 Peacock arrival will mark 8 months until For Good releases in theaters on November 21. Should practices continue, For Good will have its space held on Peacock on March 20, 2026.
