It wasn’t the fastest it could be, but still, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is coming to Paramount+ pretty fast. In fact, the film is gunning for the very near future, arriving on the streamer tomorrow, February 18 in the United States and Canada. As is typical, availability in international Paramount+ markets will be announced later.
The news first got to trades like TVLine and Variety, presumably through the press release, before Paramount+ itself tweeted #TeamSonic is taking over Paramount+! Stream #SonicMovie3 tomorrow!” Opening in theaters December 20, tomorrow marks 60 days since release, which being a Tuesday is the four days after the exact 8-week/56-day point that Transformers One (comparable as the last tilt film before it) took, while matching A Quiet Place: Day One and most recently Gladiator II.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is the highest grosser yet, building on the momentum and pushing the franchise over the $1 billion gross threshold by making $478.6 million at the global box office. It’s made $234.8 million domestically, which had it going neck and neck with Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King, with initial weekly victories over it. Internationally the film made $243.8 million. For clarity, the second film had a $405 million global total while the first surprised with its $319 million global tally.
Team Sonic started out with Ben Schwartz as Sonic meeting Tom and Maddie Wachowski, played by James Marsden and Tika Sumpter, becoming their adopted son against Doctor Ivo Robotnik, played by Jim Carrey, who has a doting assistant, Agent Stone played by Lee Majdoub. By the very end of the first film, Tails, voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessey was searching for him, and together they ended up allying with the initially adversarial Knuckles voiced by Idris Elba. 3 saw Sonic face off against a vengeful hedgehog named Shadow, voiced by Keanu Reeves, while Carrey took on a dual role as Ivo’s grandfather Gerald, driven to destroy the world by the death of his granddaughter Maria, played by Alyla Browne, a death that also originally drove Shadow to team with him. The film also features the returns of Tom Butler as his boss, G.U.N. Commander Walters and Adam Pally as Wade Whipple. James Wolk appeared as Walters back when he was just at Captain rank in flashbacks set in 1974. Natasha Rothwell as Maddie’s sister Rachel and Shemar Moore as her husband, G.U.N. agent Randall Handel only appear in disguise capacities for Tom and Maddie.
Somic the Hedgehog 3’s success was certainly prepared for, as its sequel was already being reported as it opened, and dated in January for a March 19, 2027 release. It is set to properly introduce Amy Rose after, well, go watch and find out. Directed by Jeff Fowler, the film is produced by Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, Toru Nakahara and Hitoshi Okuno and executive produced by Fowler, Haruki Satomi, Shuji Utsumi, Yukio Sugino, Tommy Gormley and Tim Miller. While Paramount+ isn’t the home to every Sonic television series, it can boast its original Knuckles miniseries which rolled out last spring, and promotion included bringing the Netflix Sonic Prime series to Nickelodeon.
