Yvonne Chapman, Live-Action 'Avatar' Kyoshi, Cast In 'Superman & Lois' Final Season
Chapman is a CW veteran who’s appeared on 'Family Law' and 'Kung Fu' and will now play an obscure ally of Lex Luthor
On Thursday, Superman & Lois star Bitsie Tulloch, who plays Lois Lane, marked being “officially over halfway” through shooting the show’s final season. We’ve long known that the Kents and Lex Luthor, played by Michael Cudlitz, are the five series regulars but with that pruned down main cast, we don’t have much of an idea of a consistent supporting cast yet. But now we definitely know Lex will not be working alone. Actress Yvonne Chapman has been cast as one of Luthor’s cohorts, Amanda McCoy.
McCoy, a character who was able to figure out Superman’s secret identity in the comics, is described as “intelligent, cunning, and loyal”, as well as “business-savvy” and “cutthroat” enough to have not only kept LuthorCorp not only afloat but at the top of its game while Lex was put away all those years ago in a sentence that only ended at the end of season 3. According to the official character description “Little is known about her mysterious past, but she’s the only one in Luthor’s inner circle that he views as an equal, which makes her a massive threat to the Kents… and anyone else who stands in her way.”
In the comics, McCoy first appeared in Superman #2, which has a cover date of February 1987. With that date and the numbering, it’s easy to tell that this was only the second issue in the run that was in the immediate wake of Crisis on Infinite Earths. McCoy was investigating Lana Lang, leading her to discover Clark is Superman, but Lex Luthor brushed her off and fired her. He wasn’t able to believe that someone as powerful as Superman would ever masquerade as a normal human. Over her time trying to prove it, she eventually died.
Chapman has already had something of a CW presence, having a guest role on The 100, recurred on the first season of Canadian import Family Law, and appeared in all three seasons of the network’s Kung Fu reboot as villain Zhilan Zhang, a series regular in the latter two seasons. Most recently, she played Avatar Kyoshi in the first season of Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender adaptation, which was renewed earlier this week for two more seasons to complete the adaptation, so she’ll likely be returning to that role. From the way the role is described it sounds like the role will be more substantially recurring than the two episodes former regular Dylan Walsh will be back for as Lois’s father Sam Lane.
Superman & Lois also stars Tyler Hoechlin as Clark/Superman, with Alex Garfin and Michael Bishop as his and Lois’s sons Jordan and Jonathan. Its fourth and final season will air this fall on The CW.
