Adult Swim Makes Shroom To Heal With 'Common Side Effects' Trailer, Premiere Date
The network’s newest animated series premieres in February
Adult Swim is getting extra pharmaceutical. Fresh off the season finale of Invincible Fight Girl, the network has prepped its next new series Common Side Effects. Created by Scavengers Reign creator Joe Bennett and Steve Hely and executive produced by Mike Judge and Greg Daniels, the 2D-animated series premieres Sunday, February 2 at 11:30 PM ET/PT on Adult Swim with two episodes followed by singles starting February 9. Each week’s new episode(s) will be available next day on Max.
“Watch our show! A gripping comedic thriller with a unique original style and big themes? You decide!” said co-creators Bennett and Hely. “We hope Common Side Effects will be enjoyed by anyone who’s ever taken a pill.” The series described as a “comedic thriller” follows what happens after a mysterious healing mushroom is discovered, or as the synopsis puts it, “Marshall and Frances are two former high school lab partners who share a secret: Marshall has discovered the world’s greatest medicine, a mushroom that can heal almost anything. But getting it out into the world won’t be easy — the DEA, big pharma and international businessmen are all on the chase to stop them.” The trailer sees him note “We spend more money than ever on healthcare and people are still sick. Think of all the people who make tons of money just by keeping us unwell.”
A preview clip released about a week later serves to introduce not only Frances and Marshall, as they chat in a coffee shop but the circumstances that allowed the very special mushroom to grow. And from the minute he found it, he was hunted. Now, the land where it was discovered is being developed over by the pharmaceutical companies in order to easier destroy it. The CEO, Rick Kruger, is voiced by Judge in a near-Hank Hill way. The rest of the voice cast doesn’t quite have an official announcement to speak of. The series is produced for the network by Bandera and Green Street Pictures. It had its world premiere at Annecy International Animation Film Festival this year before being officially announced a month later at San Diego Comic-Con.
“Joe and Steve have created something incredibly original with a series that is thrilling, beautiful and deeply funny,” said Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen. “It’s top-level television that challenges expectations and raises profound questions. It’s a truly special series and unlike anything you’ve ever seen. I’m trying not to be hyperbolic, but it’s true.”
