AMC Makes 'Snowpiercer' Its Second Rescue
While AMC is not innocent from the same practices that left Snowpiercer in need of rescue, the full series thus far will make its way this year and conclude next year
Another happy ending in the massacres of Warner Bros. Discovery on its own networks has officially occurred. More than a year after being dropped from TNT before it could air its fourth and final season as the network’s last scripted original in a “cost-cutting move”, Snowpiercer has finally found a new home.
AMC has acquired the exclusive linear and streaming rights to all four seasons of Snowpiercer, the post-apocalyptic drama series based on the 2013 film of the same name directed by Bong Joon-ho and starring Chris Evans and Tilda Swinton which itself was an adaptation of the Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette graphic novel. The first three seasons will be available to stream on AMC+ later this year, while the fourth season will air on AMC and be released on AMC+ early next year, just a year shy of the series’s initial 2026 setting. It should be noted that its latter two seasons on TNT ran from late January to late March in 2021 and 2022, giving some idea as to how early in 2025 the season could bow.
In the series, 2026 is more than seven years after the world has become a frozen wasteland, and the remnants of humanity inhabit a perpetually moving train, containing 1001 cars, across the globe. The third season finale created a schism on the train with Melanie Cavill, played by Jennifer Connelly, taking charge of the Eternal Engine and those passengers who chose to stay on Snowpiercer for “relative safety”, while Andre Layton, played by Daveed Diggs, leads the others on Big Alice who chose to venture to the mysterious outside world of New Eden. The show has grown quite the ensemble, with familiar faces like Mike O’Malley, Rowan Blanchard, Sean Bean and Archie Panjabi being just a few of the series regulars, and there are a hefty number of recurring characters as well. Back when season 4 was in production, Clark Gregg and Michael Aronov were confirmed to be part of the cast, but in what capacities had yet to be confirmed.
“Snowpiercer is an edge-of-your-seat thrill ride with a loyal fanbase – similar to the passionate fandoms we serve across our biggest franchise series – and a welcome addition to AMC and AMC+,” said Ben Davis, who is AMC Networks and AMC Studios’ executive vice president of original programming. “We look forward to giving viewers an opportunity to binge the first three seasons later this year, in anticipation of the arrival of a remarkable fourth season helmed by Paul Zbyszewski and this stellar cast, which will premiere in 2025.” Zbyszewski himself remarked jubilantly “We’re so thrilled the train has finally found a home, and we’re incredibly grateful to everyone at AMC and Tomorrow Studios for giving the fans of Snowpiercer a chance to enjoy season four with all the hard work this amazing cast and crew put into it.” Tomorrow Studios’ founder & CEO Marty Adelstein, president and partner Becky Clements, and executive vice president Alissa Bachner chimed in as well, with “We love Snowpiercer and AMC is the perfect partner to share its final season, which completes an incredible series filled with brilliant talent that entertains viewers while exploring important global issues.”
One might be wondering how it’s the second rescue AMC has made. That’s because back in October, they picked up the ten-part Captain Nemo (of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea) series Nautilus, after Disney shed it from its Disney+ slate as part of the content writedowns from May that also included dropping The Spiderwick Chronicles. A British production shot in Australia, it tells Nemo’s origin as “an Indian Prince robbed of his birthright and family, a prisoner of the East India Mercantile Company and a man bent on revenge against the forces that have taken everything from him.” Shazad Latif plays Nemo, setting sail with his motley crew on board the awe-inspiring Nautilus, as he not only battles with his enemy, but discovers “a magical underwater world”. Joining Latif are Georgia Flood, Thierry Frémont, Pacharo Mzembe, Arlo Green, Tyrone Ngatai, Ling Cooper Tang, Andrew Shaw, Ashan Kumar, Céline Menville and Kayden Price.
Nautilus will be coming this year. AMC isn’t completely innocent or heroic in these writedown games, having done what Warner Bros. Discovery did to Snowpiercer to 61st Street, Moonhaven and Pantheon.
