'American Dad!' Sets Season 21 Premiere Date On TBS
The previously-announced soundtrack has its title and own release date revealed as well
The American Dad! constituency will be back in time for Election Day. Two months after promising a fall premiere at San Diego Comic-Con, the Seth MacFarlane-created animated series will premiere its 21st season (to be listed as 19th on Hulu) on Monday, October 28 at 10 PM on TBS, maintaining the time slot it’s always had in the ten years (and a week) since moving from Fox in 2014.
It will have been over ten months since the last season ended, but at least this means, if the season is as full as previous, it won’t be ending on a Christmas episode like so many in the TBS era have. At least not this year. What this season does contain is the Smiths’ own nightmarish trek up Mt. Everest, the reopening of the Langley Falls boardwalk; Roger becoming sick with a mysterious illness; and Klaus having to deal with an imposter. Plots already shared at the panel included that it was Rogu who gets a deadly illness and whole family has to pretend they’re doctors to save him. It is unclear if it was misreported or the result of misspeaking. Roger and Stan are forced to fuse surgically after getting in a train accident. There will still be a Christmas episode, as well as another musical episode, with Klaus rapping being a noted highlight. Guest stars include Charles Barkley, Michael Imperioli, Leslie Jones, Joel McHale, Bret The Hitman Hart, Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias, Neal McDonough and married actors Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick.
Yes, the season premiere is less than three weeks away, but it clears the show of Major League Baseball playoff interruption, as the network is the home of the American League Division Series and Championship Series. October 14 sees the start of the latter, while the 21st has game 6 scheduled should it be needed. The Division Series are still in-progress, with the Royals and Tigers finally getting their home games this postseason after being on the road for the Wild Card Series as well as the first two Division Series games.
A soundtrack was announced at the SDCC panel as well, promised to coincide with the new season’s premiere. With the show’s return having been dated, so has the album. From Hollywood Records comes American Dad!: Greatest Hits, which will be released on Friday, October 25. It features iconic, quirky, and fan-favorite songs from across the show’s extensive run. While the press release did not confirm the previously-reported length of 12-14 songs or what songs they are, it is expected to include “Daddy’s Gone” from “Hot Water” and “When I Dress My Body”, known as “These Shiny Shoes” on the show’s wiki, from the episode “Fight and Flight”. American Dad!: Greatest Hits will be available to stream Spotify and Apple Music and purchasable on all the typical digital markets.
American Dad! of course stars MacFarlane as Stan Smith and Roger the alien, Wendy Schaal as Francine Smith, Scott Grimes as Steve, Seth’s sister Rachael MacFarlane as Hayley, Jeff Fischer as her husband…Jeff Fischer, Dee Bradley Baker as Klaus Heissler the German skier-turned-goldfish and Rogu the homunculus, and Patrick Stewart as Stan’s boss, CIA Deputy Director Avery Bullock. Now, I don’t know whether Stewart, who has been in the role since the 2005 premiere, was actually promoted. However, he was listed in last year’s press releases among the main cast as well. Wikipedia has adopted it, but the show’s wiki has not. MacFarlane created the series with Mike Barker and Matt Weitzman. MacFarlane and Weitzman executive produce with co-showrunner Brian Boyle.
